    Drilled Rimless

On drilled rimless are people cutting and filing the screws or just using screw caps?

Cut and then round off with a special plier. This is the way I was taught almost 40 years ago.

Nope, burnishing pliers. They are the same thing the diamond setters use to round the prongs on some of the Tiffany mountings. They make a nice rounded end, unlike files or end caps.

I've seen a bunch of drilled rimless walk into the office recently, where the screws were not trimmed, and they looked very dangerous. I can't believe the patient was sent out that way. Those caps tend to fall off, and they are only intended to cover the screws for safety during try-on and fitting.

Burnishing Pliers can be had from most companies that sell jewelry making equipment.

real clean and easy finishing for screws on drilled rimless

    Hi all,

Among screws finishing solutions for drilled rimless glasses, the ultimate one is TOPCLEAN, from DB OPTIC company, distributed in the USA by AIT Industries.

    see www.aitindustries.com and www.dboptic.com

TOPCLEAN is a special tool designed for the sole purpose of letting you finish perfectly, within 2 or 3 seconds, the cut screws.

On the website you can find all usefull information, but do not hesitate to contact me for any matter.

That is a nice tool, but, grossly overpriced!

    TOPCLEAN price

I can understand your reaction about the price, but this price is really consistent with the efficiency of the tool, with the quality of its design and manufacturing, with the time it allows you to spare. Moreover, this tool allows you to really and systematically get a real optimal, and good looking finish, while it suppresses all the risks of breaking or scratching the lenses while finishing the screws...

That "Top Clean" look terrific! I don't think the $$$ is bad for a high-quality, European piece of equipment.

The only draw back I see (and you should know that I use the metal *cap-nuts*) is that, when you finish the screw that close, it *may* make it harder for the next lens replacement.

    Minor point, though!

    Screws Finishing with TopClean

Barry, you can very easily overcome this screw length problem by adding 2 or 3 washers for keeping some space for potential lens thickness increase in next prescription. I have such washers on my glasses, and they are nearly not noticeable.

I will complete the information on TopClean manufacturing, by saying that all its mechanical parts are manufactured one by one in a small high precision micromechanics company near Paris, France.

Or, you can avoid the problem entirely by sticking to brands like Silhouette.
Personally, I don't like rimless styles where the "screw" is permanently mounted to the frame front. If such screws are used, it's so easy for the manufacturer to make them removable (and easy to replace with new, long screws when needed).
At any rate, that tool is nifty!
