    Cylinder machine on high speed?

We run our Coburn 506 on low speed right now. What theoretical consequences are there for running it on high speed?

As far as fining goes, we have a fresh cold water supply and fine for 1:30 at 18 psi pin pressure. We use DAC 2-step pads. Polish is recirculated without any sort of chilling mechanism. We are not what you would call high volume.

    Thanks!

If you can effectively deal with the heat, you can use the higher speed for less time.

My real concern is trying to do so on the polisher. Having it recirculate but not using a chilling system can set you up for issues especially if running on high speed.

High speed tends to have other issues as well, if the flow of water is not constant or the volume is not high enough you will have the pads slip off the blocks, or tear away. If you are not high volume stick with the low speed and save yourself the headaches.

The 506 had originally one speed. Coburn made a fortune coming thru in the late '70s or early '80s modifing the ones in the field. They said the slower speeds gave you a better, more definate axis on low cyls.

Just a thought but, it would probably have a little to do with your generator also. How fine your generator cuts the lens would essentially make it easier for the lens to fine out on high speeds. Please correct me if I am wrong though.

How accurately, as opposed to how "finely" (or smoothly) the generator cuts would influence the decision. You can have surface roughness and form error in any combination. Obviously, the ideal is low surface roughness and low form error.

The less accurate the curves off the generator, the more important it would be to use a slower (and perhaps longer) first fine.

If you have a fridge available with a freezer in it, put an ice pack in it and drop that in when useing the machine to help keep the temp. down.
