Minimum rimless edge thickness

Is there a min ansi standard or your own standards, just wondering what everyone thoughts.

Good question, it usually depends on the frame. For some of the Airlocks for example since an old thread brought it to mind if the lens is not thick enough at the edge, you can't get the temple to be stable. I have found that in that case a 1.5mm minimum is essential. For the silhouette style mounts it is about a 2 - 2.5mm edge thickness minimum. For screws, I won't go to low, but after lastic and metal bushings alot of times you can go pretty thin on those and still make a nice sturdy pair 1.2 -1.3mm. I don't actually caliper them, but when surfaceing I will chang the settings if it is a rimless job.

Although I agree with all Harry said, my standard asking is 2mm on all drill and string mounts.

Same here ... we want 2.0 on drills and something close on groove.

We do occasionally edge some stock lenses at about 1.0 edges, but it makes me nervous watching it groove em.

for groove I want the same thickness as the groove (0.55mm) on both sides so 1.7mm minimum makes a very thin and nice looking job.

I agree with harry on a groove. I like 1.7-1.8. I do not always get it, but usually do. It makes for a great looking lens. And if you are using the proper lens material, no worries about flaking or chipping. I will go as low as 1.0-1.3 on drill mounts.

What material are you using? Would you do that with regular plastic (I like 2.0)? Or poly only(1.8)? How about high index(2.0)?

I have gone pretty darn thin on grooved lenses. It all depends on groove depth and string tension. Don't have too many problems with chipping either. My best result have been with CR-39.

I will groove any material, but recommend 1.67 or poly for drills (don't use trivex cost prohibitive, but I'll order it if that is what the client wants)

Are you saying your trivex is more expensive than 1.67? Or is it the bang for the buck that makes it cost prohibitive?

would you like to know why do labs sometimes get plus lenses too thick on drill rimless? The computer systems min edge is just what it said, minimum EDGE. The drill holes are 3 or 4 mm from the edge.

It is the bang for the buck as well as yes, I pay less for 1.67 SV lenses and for Seiko Proceed blanks than I do for finished trivex lenses thorugh a lab. Sad but true. I work for a franchised Pearle Vision so we do get some ridiculous prices on lenses, unfortunately anything outside of the lenses I have access to are usually more expensive.

No Trivex/Phoenix/Trilogy? I know that poly is usually less expensive, but Trivex is a godsend(or Krishna send, or whatever send).
