The "Windows" key on the key board

is driving me mad! I have windows XP, and this keyboard at work (new computers) have this key with the window's logo down around ctrl and alt. I hit it accidentially, then every time I try to type I am prompting it to do this or that. For example, after I've hit the windows button, pressing "e" brings up explorer. "f" brings up "find" or search window.

If I press the button again, it doesn't stop, and if I press the button 100000 times, that doesn't work either. Even restarting my computer leaves the darn thing active.

Does anyone know how this button is supposed to work, and if I can just turn it off?

You can if you don't mind hacking the registry. And let me warn you, if you are not in full understanding on how the Registry works, are comfortable with working in it, and are not sure on how to backup your Registry, etc. Just put up with it. Otherwise, the method is defined below...
    1. Start the Registry Editor
    2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Keyboard Layout
    3. From the Edit menu select New > Binary value
    4. Give this new value the name Scancode Map
    5. Double-click the new value, and enter the following binary data (0 = zero): 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 00 00 5B E0 00 00 5C E0 00 00 00 00
    6. Close the registry editor
    7. Log off, or restart Windows for the changes to take effect

Note: This is a system wide setting, so it will affect all users on the system

It is by universal misunderstanding that all agree. For if, by ill luck, people understood each other, they would never agree.

It actually sounds like that the Windows key is stuck in that position because I don't think it should be doing that. Normally you have to press and hold that key and then press another key for the shortcut to work.

Play around with the key on the keyboard and try and lift it out.

Hmm...that's a good point. It is a brand new keyboard (Dell) so I don't think it's physically sticking in that position.
I figured it was maybe like a CAPS LOCK button, press it once, it's on. press again, it's off.
But the darn thing never turns off and OMG is it a PAIN (you know it always happens when I'm on the phone trying to schedule an appointment or a patient's staring at me trying to use my computer...)

It sounds like you may have sticky keys turned on. Look in Accessibility Options under Control Panel.

That's something I have never heard of before. Thanks for sharing Doug.

I hate the key so much, I went out and bought a bunch of vintage 101 key keyboards.

I'm a gamer geek and that key is death on games.
