    Building a cottage

Oh-Oh... this involves more power tools. Last week, I broke ground for the construction of a small cottage on my family's 200 acre island on B.C.s North Thompson River. I cleared the site, and hauled and placed 5 tons of concrete and gravel to the site to begin the foundation.
it will be a small place, only 16 by 24, but it should be a very interesting project. It will be supplied with wood heat, propane, and a limited amount of electricity. In deference to my wife, it will contain a sizeable kitchen, and will (hopefully) have wrap-around decking overlooking the water, and eventually a small dock for the "LRB" (little red boat) I hope to get some pics online soon, and hopefully, will post updates on the progress. We'll just see if I make it with all fingers attatched. :bbg:

Ok, so I havn't done anything to the cottage....just ressurecting the posting so we can all think spring may not be so far distant. The cottage is still a few concrete footings on the ground, and if the mosquitos havn't carried them away yet, I'll be looking to begin construction soon.
Anyone wanna come up and swing a hammer?

    more than a year later...

Well, the cottage is up, the roof is on, the doors and windows are in, and the place is locked up. The bedroom and bathroom are framed in, and this month, I hope to install the shingles on the roof, and the siding on the cabin. The woodstove is in place, but not installed, no wiring or plumbing yet.

I am starting to scout future cottage sites. Won't buy for several more years, but will buy one.

from what I have read about what they are digging up there around you, maybe you had better worry more about keeping your feet than pounding your fingers.
Seriously, sounds like a dream cottage, congrats!

Well it seems the more things change the more they stay the same- Cindy to the computer rescue yet again, despite the fact that we no longer work together :bbg: I just happened to log into the wrong work email from home and figured I ought to give the guy a hand here.

Well, around here we call that bait! Hook him through the lips with a #1 hook, throw him out into the river, and snag a 10-foot sturgeon. OK, then a six-foot long, three foot wide river catfish.

(not that you'd catch a sturgeon with that kind of live bait)

Nice fish there David! I'm assuming that was taken on the Thompson near the island? (Assuming this because your wife told me you'd gone up to work on the cabin). And very nice Bambiis too- at least you know you'd never go hungry up there

It's a great time when something is being created and my favorite moment is design of the rooms. I remember when my family decided to buy an apartment in Cyprus without cosmetic repairs. So, I designed all rooms by myself and it was a great time. Hopefully, you enjoyed this moment also and yes, I am waiting for your photos also.

At some point of my life I wanted to build a small house in Europe too but later I found out that there is so many cheap property for sale in Czech Republic so I just got one and redesigned it with pleasure with my wife.
