New Opticians Association in British Columbia?

I hear through the BC optical grapevine that a new Opticians Association of BC (OABC?) is/has been formed? Anyone know anything about this?

Hello All!

Yes, it is true: we have a new optician's organization here in BC. We are the OBC (Opticians of British Columbia) and are working in partnership with the OAC, with which we share a blended membership-- all BC OAC members now automatically belong to the OBC. We're very grateful to the OAC for providing us with some funding and support, but we are BC opticians working for BC opticians-- we are setting our own goals and objectives.

We began as the BC Opticians Vision Screening Committee- a group of us who wanted to become involved in providing CE opportunities throughout the province, in conjunction with the OAC. During the development of, and then registration for these events, we spoke to opticians throughout the province and quickly recognised the need for a responsive optician's organization here. We were born from this need. Our goals and objectives are what our fellow BC opticians are asking for:

--access to CE opportunities throughout the entire province

--a unified voice and effective provincial advocacy for BC opticians,

--an entity which will involve BC opticians in the growth and promotion of the profession, and create networking opportunities.

Our website, http://www.opticians.bc.ca/ is just barely there and is under construction, but there is a 'contact us' menu option. Our office is based in Victoria, and our administrator will give you any information you may want, either by email or by phone, or direct you to the right person to talk to. And yes, we truly value the opinions of BC opticians-- that's why we're here-- and we sincerely want to hear from you!
