    Drivewear Lenses by Younger

I have read a bit about these lenses and understand that they are now released. Have any Optiboarders tried this product yet? Is it an everday, everyway type lens? Meaning, is it clear enough to be in a regular dress pair of eyewear or must it be driving specific? I assume it is available in Image, how about SV? Thanks for insight, and opinions. Is there really a market for this? Or is it a gimmick like the SPLITZ transtitions that made a big thud!

I had my lab phone the Younger Canadian office, and they have never ever heard of the product.

I love how well these companies share information throughout the company.

You'll want to go to the Drivewear site to read about this lens. It is polarized, so it is never clear. It is currently available only in SV. I've had a pair for a while, they're great in the car, and make a pretty fine golf lens as well.

    RT-
Thanks!! Can you wear them as a "dress" pair, or are they too dark? I assume that they are really just a modified sunglass.

I just ordered a pair yesterday. Should have them next week and I will let you know what I think, but I have to say I'm extremely excited about them.

I spoke with my Transitions rep a few days ago about DRIVEWEAR. She didn't have a sample of the product and indicated it is officially being launched at VE West. However, she did convey many of the product features which is the brainchild between the Czar of photochromatic lenses and the Czar of Polarized lenses.

It is a constant density polarized lenses which affords approx. 50% light transmission unactivated and 20% light transmission activated. Transition is positioning DRIVEWEAR as a task specific lens product which they expect will enable them to attain a competetive position in the ophthalmic sunwear marketplace.

Although there are a few limitations based on the inherant product features, it will be interesting to see how the product is percieved by both retailers and consumers.

I made a pair, prescription, in the beginning of July. I have used them for driving only. The color is fantastic for overcast days and on sunny days they get dark enough for a GOOD sunglass. I think the color of the lense, combined with certain lighting would allow more uses such as golf, fishing, hunting etc.

The color outside is very dependent on a whole variety of factors, including temperature, and the intensity of the sunlight. THe website shows some representations of the lens in that stage, outdoors, bright light, and they are fairly represenatational.

Please let me know the result, and how do you like it? Does the color change behind the windshield of a car? I have samples of semi-finished in my hand, but it has not grinded yet, since I am wearing PAL lens.

The lab tells me that I should receive the lenses early next week, I'll be sure and post what I think once I have them.

I was extremely excited about them and, like we do with all new lenses, the doc had me order a pair for myself and try them.

My take on them ... they are ok ... but just ok. Would I offer them to a person who said they wanted sunglasses for driving? Absolutely NOT. They really don't darken enough and are more like a fashion tint. Now, I like them because they are not as dark as sunglasses in the car and they do change "a little" in different lighting conditions.

Analysis .... They still have to do some work on the technology before I would recommend these EXPENSIVE lenses to a patient who is used to wearing sunglasses in a car.

I'm ordering a pair for a patient of mine. We'll see how it goes... they are quite pricey. When I first heard of them, I thought they'd be clear, but if they're just this specialty lens, I'm not so sure I'll sell many.
It seems to me that they'd be GREAT for golf, and I'm surprised none of the marketing says anything about it.
Please let us know how they are, for those of you who are trying them!
(In case you haven't checked it out, people wondering about the color can go to www.drivewear.com and it does show you what the lens looks like unactivated and activated.)

I absolutely love my pair. I can't bring myself to wear my other sunglasses anymore. They are awesome for golf too.

I grinded a pair for my staff to be tested, and she also loved it so much.

Just delivered my first pair and sold my second pair. In my estimation the lens does not get light enough indoors, it has kind of a funny green hue indoors in what I would estimate to be about 60% absorbtion. The first patient thought they were great, with the second patient I showed them a 60% gray lens because I don't have a sample, and told them it would be more green/gray than what I showed, this did not persuede them not to buy. I hope this helps you Fezz.

The starting un-activated state has about 37% transmission. Your guess of 60% absorption is pretty good. When activated outdoors in typical bright light the transmission drops to about 10%. Behind the windshield the lens will go about halfway in between or about 25%.

The last two states especially are tough to give a correct answer on since they are very dependent on a wide variety of factors, including temperature like all photochromics.

    Hope this helps.
