    UV coatings

Is there a way to tell if a pair of sunglasses has a UV coating on it?

You can get a UV meter.

Even really cheap sunglasses usually have UV protection. Most opticians and optometrists will have a UV meter.

Polarized lenses don't need a separate UV coat.

Perhaps, but it's not relevant in this circumstance. I have some glasses that are not polarized, and I don't know if they have UV coating. I'd like them to for protection of my eyes. I don't know how to find out if they do.

Would you please clarify your above statement by explaining a bit more in detail why these lenses conatin an automatic UV protection?

The problem with using a meter, after the lenses have been tinted to a sunglass shade 75%-80% (NO UV applied), the lenses would register a full UV protection- close to 100% !!!

As a separate question, I'm curious about this, too. UV protection is not about vision comfort so much as protecting the eyes from a harmful part of the light spectrum. I hadn't heard that polarized lenses specifically screen out ultraviolet light.
