Question cost...i may be getting ripped off

    Hey optiboard,

I need a new pair of glasses. I have decided to get the 1.74 Eisslor(sp) lense with AR. My optician says for 1.74 is 400 american dollars and for Zeiss 1.9 it is 500. Mind that this is just for the lense. Is the 1.74 really costing 400 on average at most places? My indexs are about -14.5 and -13.5.

Aren't there other optical shops near by where you can comparison shop? That is the first thing I would do.

not really. this is really the only shop around. I live in a small area in New Jersey, kinda far down south and nothing is really around. there is a walmart but i know they dont carry this lense.

That's about what we charge for this lens in your rx. This is not a standard lens, it is a state of the art very high end speciality lens. You are not being ripped off.

I am editing to say that we probably would charge you more then $400.00 since we do charge extra for prescriptions over -6 diopters. Honestly, you are getting a fair price.

We charge $510 for that lens - and we are NOT the most expensive place in town.

Why do you think you may be getting ripped off?

I ask this question so that my peers on this board can get some insight into the mind of the consumer. What was it that the eyecare professional did or said that made you think you were getting ripped off??

it always seems like the lenses are highly priced. the service they give is great but because they are the only place like this in the area, they have high prices. Like 400 lense 150+ for base frame and so on. Fitting fee and so many charges they force on you. I just thought 400 was alot, but I guess its the going rate. I saw online that this lense they were sellinf for like 275 at like some optical online store.

I think the question might be asked wrong. Getting ripped off implies paying too much due to ignorance of the product. I think the original post really wanted to know what everyone charges for these lenses? Paying too much depends on where you are at in the world I guess. By this logic, people in Europe have been getting ripped off for gasoline for years now while we only had to pay $1 to $2 a gallon compared to their $4 to $5 a gallon. It is still the same stuff is it not?

I would have no idea what the going rate is but I would assume that it differs whether you are in downtown Manhattan or Podunk, OK (no offense to anyone in OK of course)

With your prescription - 14 and -13 I'm sure your used to paying a higher price
    for your lenes.

    Looks like lenes are $300.00-$320.00
    Looks like AR coating $80.00-$100.00

    NOT BAD AT ALL

This post smells worse than a 1.67 being edged without ventilation in a closed lab.
