As far as I remember it was Carl Zeiss Jena and the time was in the 1930's. They coated Camera and microscop lenses.Originally Posted by Steph26
For the use of glasses an Italian company in Milan , cant remember the name, coated glass lenses in sunglass shades and made the first uniform tinted Rx sunglass lenses that had previously only been abailable tinted in the mass and the RX of course made the uneven tinted through the differences in thickness. That was in the late 50s.
AR on plastic started to come on the market in the mid 1980's.
I was also told that it was Carl Zeiss, and you will have to trust Chris's time frame. They were also used on binocular lenses. I was also told that AR on plastic was developed in a joint venture between Zeiss and Pentax. I have been madly trying to get historical info to verify this but alas my time was short. I have direct knowledge that we have members belonging to the AR Council, perhaps they can enlighten us!

The principle of anti-reflective coatings was invented and patented by Carl Zeiss in 1935.
The coatings, at the time were known as Zeiss ET coatings.
