I have asked this before but I am thinking of moving to FL, is there any recipricity for TN licensure. I already have my ABOC and NCLC...what else must I do??? how much??? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Steph
The exam in Tennessee has been so basic, up and until this year when Dr. Ferguson took over the test that it is, unfortunately, not comparable with other state exams. Florida is far more comprehensive.
I understand that, but what I want to know is what is involved and do they recognize recipricity? I have been in the business for 12 years I still may be able to study and pass a test. If not, what do I have to do to get it?
Thanks for your response,
Steph
Reciprocity, by definition, works both ways. Unfortunately most states avoid reciprocal agreements because when they are in place a certain amount of control is lost by the governing agency. This is the "official" reasoning, not mine. If you have demonstrated sufficient entry level skills in one state, you should find no difficulty in doing it in another. If you have passed the ABO and are still certified, you need not take that exam again. Many states are moving to NCLE certification as well so it would be a good idea to pick this up as well, even if you do not plan to get into contact lenses. That leaves the state practical examination which, if you have been in practice for some time, should not be difficult to pass. After all, its an entry level test. Many states will credential an individual if the licensing standards in the candidate's home state are essentially the same. Florida is NOT one of those states. The casual observer might think that licensing regulations are used to restrain trade, and that may have been somewhat true years ago, but it is not the case today.States have to be real carefull in that area. If you decide to get credentialed in Florida prepare to "shed some green". I heard its $800 to take the practical.
