Help picking a high index lens

    Hi there,
I need help chosing a high index lens.

    My perscription is high

    OD -9.25 -1.75 25
    OS -9.25 -2.75 165

    My choices are:
    Nikon 1.74 with ICE coating
    Essilor 1.74 with Crizal
    Essilor 1.67 with Crizal

Now, I haven't been on Nikons for a while, I've been on Essilor's from Costco Optical.

Does anyone have any opinion and/or exprience with both these lenses with respect to clarity, longevity, etc...

    Any thoughts are welcome.

    Thanks.

    Find a good Optician

Since these are all Essilor related products, I would assume that your optical retailer deals with an Essilor lab and these would all be processed in a similar manner. If you don't have confidence in your optican then I would suggest you find one that you do have confidence in. The optican is familiar with your total eye care needs and can answer your questions much better than some you find on the internet that you provide limited information.

    Thanks.
Do not forget that the high index monomers to make those different lenses come out of the pot.

Like Shell,Exxon and other brand gas are made in the same refinery from the same oil.

Optical lens manufacvturers do buy the same monomers, cast their lenses into curved lenses with optical powers. They even purchase the molds from the same sources.

It really makes no difference which brand you buy if the index is the same............it;s all advertising hype.

Again......they are all good..........one advetises more than the other.

They all use the same type application machinery and use the same ingredients but aplly them maybe a little different and each probably claims that he is better. Again a lot of advertising hype and brainwash.

With such a strong rx, my advice, for what its worth, would be to pick a better material with a higher abbe value. I've had no end of problems with these types of lenses because of chromatic abberations (poor peripheral vision). Cosmetically 1.74s, etc. look great but you have to think about your vision.

My personal recommendation (and what I am about to try) would be a 1.6 material with a high abbe value of about 42. There are only a few out there ... Hoya eyas, Sola finalite and I think Carl Zeiss have one called Optical Claret - perhaps some of the experts could recommend some others.

What I've decided to do is have 2 pairs, a 1.74 pair for partying - where I place a slightly higher priority on my looks than my vision, and a 1.6 (or even CR39) pair for work where excellent vision is an absolute must!

Go to the better fitter of the two. Essentially, try to pick the better optician. If you do then that optician will give you the best product.
