    Trick Question

    What state requires independent Opticians to have a license and then requires them to;
Get 1 hour each and every year of state law, which never changes, in addition to 7 hours of super education. Same guy every year telling you the LAW.
Makes a big deal every year about how your license expires 12/31 not 1/1.
Makes you have not only a state license but also a place of work permit so they will know where you are at at all times. Commies.
Sends a paid spy around to check and make sure you are where they think you are and making real sure you don't step out and some unlicensed dope touches a pair of glasses.
Encourages you to get more education and then treats you like a 5 year old.
Ask around and see if you can solve this mystery.

I think you MUST be talking about Florida!

Maybe VA and FL are in cahoots with each other!

I am speaking from Massachusetts, about Massachusetts investigators but I am sure it is a universal situation.

Your LAW may not change much because to change a law requires money and a lot of time. YEARS in fact. The rules and regulations change more rapidly however, usually after a public hearing and a vote by the board. Some of the recent changes in MA concern "Cosmetic Contact Lenses" Adding an NCLE requirement to the mix of additional CE's. The Definition of Optician has been codified as well as defining what constitutes "dispensing" a pair of spectacles.

I can't speak to VA but I think you are painting registration boards with too broad a brush. I am going to email this thread to one of YOUR board members so that he may respond more succinctly to the Virginia situation......IF in fact you were talking about the Commonwealth of Virginia. You couldn't have been talking about the Commonwealth of Massachusetts because we lacked the foresight to offer voluntary practice registration during our last revision.

    Truth hurts

Truth is Grown Professional people deserve better treatment from their state board.
The board is there to make sure the public is protected and unless they have a written complaint they should leave you to do your job.
They raise the cost of licensure and gripe about not having enough money then waste it letting somebody riding around playing sheriff, looking for trouble.
They are not acting like professional folk and do not deserve to be treated as such.
Education that is required should be a learning time and not a repetitive story year after year.
The fact that speakers have a small number of memorized speeches does not mean that I have the time to waste or the desire to hear it over and over.
Give me something new or call it what it is A WASTE OF TIME!

I think the points I addressed in my first reply are deserving of comment.I think this thread will enjoy a short life if it continues on in this vein. You repeat the same charges without substantiation. I can prove LAW does change. I can PROVE investigators are not spies. I can PROVE education does cause learning.
What is the point you are trying (thus far unsucessfully) to make???

Are you an investigator, what's to prove, you have your opinion I have mine.
Education, real education that is, is a learning experience. The same ole same ole year after year is BORING.
I think I made my point the first time, maybe you missed it.
You sound like a board member to me, protect at all cost.

It seems you would be better to practice in a state that is non licensed. I have sat through many of the hours you describe and although the law class does not change much there are always something that you will have forgot or that has changed since the previous year. It always amazes me some of the questions that are ask in that class, obviously not everyone knows or remembers the law as it pertains to opticians.

HC: It is possible to be boared of education when one is required to take, and re-take sales pitches, and low to intermediate education courses to keep up certification. One gets tired of learning how to take a P.D. with no courses or even touch-up courses on really interesting things, like frame repair, coloring frames, different frame designs for different nose shapes, different ear shapes, etc.

Education should be progressive and interesting. The latest and greatest design of progressive isn't interesting. The fact that transitions is a hair better, or AR is a little better isn't interesting. I have attended many gatherings with 20+ hours of "education" per meeting and actually learned a few "pearls" which were usually something I had forgotten. The pearls could have been encapsulated into about 10 minites.

If education is a product, make it something someone wants to buy. If it's a golf tournament with some boaring classroom attached, call it that.

Can't we all just get along?

C'mon everbody! If this was a discussion in our opticals, with either a client or associate, I think we'd all keep our calm and cool temperments (sp?) - why don't we all do the same on the board?

BTW - I'm the 25yr old idealist who resides in Eutopia, Florida.
