OK, I'm going to brag, can't help myself - my sister Beverly is going to be on the Today show tomorrow, promoting her new cookbook, which I will shamelessly plug just as soon as I know its name. Watch if you can!

This will actually be her second appearance on the show. She has two wonderful restaurants on Maui, which is where I'm going when I die (Hailemaile General Store and Joe's Bar and Grill). Hopefully, I won't have to choose between the two.

If that weren't enough, Bev's son-in-law Greg Poirier wrote and directed the movie "Tomcats", which is nearing release. There was an article in USA Today last week, the headline of which read "Banned in Boston". Apparently, the ads slated to go on MTA buses were deemed too racy. How cool is that?

I'm a DISTANT cousin of Debbie ("You Light Up My Life") Boone. (seriously, I am) How cool is THAT??

Wish I had time to get over to see it this week, while I'm in Honolulu. Perhaps I'll schedule some extra time next trip.

Will I get a discount if I mention your name Robert - or food posioning because I know you?

That's great news Robert! I wish I had known about this when my wife and I were in Maui in December. We definitely would have visited one of the restaurants.

Well, it might get you a table :) ...

It's definitely worth the trip - especially if you haven't seen Maui, it's quite different from Honolulu.

Hey, I met Johnny Cash. Of course, I was six at the time and had no clue who he was.

Will try and get over there.

Since this also seems to be the place to discuss "who we've met/seen" I sat next to Shirley Mclean last week on my plane and sat behind Morgan Freeman on another. Met Barbara Bach & Ringo Starr (Barbara is the cousin of a friend). Passed by Rod Stewart, Mohammad Ali, and Bruce Willis in one of my many airports (different times).

Spend entirely too much time in airports - lol.

Well, I was an extra in the Kurt Russel movie "Used Cars". I didn't meet Kurt but I was able to meet his co-star Jack Warden.

If you missed it (or want to write down the recipe):
    http://www.msnbc.com/m/v/video_news.asp

Click on "Down-Home Hawaiian Cooking" under "Today Show".

BTW, waiting to see this reminded me why I rarely watch "Today". "Can aspirin make your baby fly? We'll find out after the break..."

I'm embarrassed to say I actually sorta liked Debbie Boone - but I got over it. And there was no more culturally significant moment in the early 60's than Pat Boone's rendition of Little Richard's Tooty Fruity. Pat was her father, wasn't he? Who knows what might've happened, had she been Debbie Zappa instead.

From the trailer, Tomcats looks like it's along the lines of There's Something About Mary. You can find out more at

    Well Mr. Shanbaum,

I congratulate your sister on her success. It is always good to see doting siblings. I'm sure you're very proud of her and I congratulate you as well for being a supportive brother.

I would ask that when you find out the name of the cook book (which should have been a prerequisite for the bragging rights ;) I would like to know what it is. I always like new recipes.

    Take care,

    Darris C.

    Thumbs up

Shanbaum, I did see your sister this morning!
Pretty lady and good taste in eyewear :)
I don't suppose she'd like to adopt a 25 yr old South Carolinian to be her house girl, huh? :D

I'll check out that movie when it comes out!

I had to record it - she did look pretty good, didn't she?

I missed it sorry!! I am glad for your sister though that is very exciting. As for Debbie Boone, Andrea that is another one of those "so who are you related to" topics that we all so love. I am distant cousins to Fabian the one hit wonder teen idol from the 50's or 60's not sure which as it is before my time :) Also related by marriage to Al Capone hmmmmm.....

As revealed in Sunday's chat, Steve is ex-mafia, so maybe you could get together and form a hit-man business :)

Sorry I missed the segment of your sister's book. When I was 4 years old, we were on the "Howdy Doody" show and just before we moved to Maine from Massachusettes, when I was 5, the host from Romper Room wished our family a safe trip with her majic mirror. Just my claim to fame.
