    Question

I'm curious - how does one estimate the age of a deer?

First, you cut it in half and count the rings. You then divide this by the length of it's teeth in millimetres. Take a blood sample. If it contains alcohol, then you know it is at least 18 or 21, depending on which state it lives in. Look around it's house. If it has posters of Eminem and Britney Spears, it is probably still quite young. If it has lace head protectors on the sofa, then it is very old.
Failing that, who cares? It's not going to get any older, is it?

I bagged a doe in West Virginia once. I could have sworn it she was 18. Turned out she was only 15. Thankfully, I WAS in West Virginia!

Nice deer,Pete. Did you bagit with that Silver Bullet??????

Robert, the age of a deer is estimated based on tooth wear mainly.......there are other factors, but that is the most consistent one.

    Pete,

I think his head would look great in your dispensary. The women would immediately notice the latest fashion eyewear dangling from his horns.

    Great Job

The fella with the Game Commission measured his head, antler thickness, and teeth... He was pretty busy, so I didn't get to ask him exactly what he was doing...

Judging by the way that stomache looks, I can't tell the age but I could make a few guesses as to the brand of beer that thing was putting away. My stomache looked like that after a luke warm Bud once.

Sorry 'bout the graphic nature of deer hunting... My uncle took some shots especially for the (mostly female) office staff here- me being a gentleman and all, I didn't feel the need to share them :) .

That said, the deer bologna has been GREAT snack food during the final days of the football season (except my tooth did manage to find a very small piece of lead in one slice- guess they didn't get all of that silver bullet... thought I had lost a filling).

You shouldn't have to estimate it's age at all. Just check its ID and you will know how old it is :-)
