as a qualified Audiologist too, I find this ammusing. For years, audiology has been at the poor end of the technological feeding chain - presumably not a sexy enough a product. I was fitting hearing aids to spectacle frames 20 years ago, and it was all pretty lo-tech stuff.

If you ever heard the amplifier / transducer sound quality of a hearing aid you would be horrified.. and now... Bluetooth and MP3 players in a pair of sunglasses! I only hope this fad has the swing off of introducing some decent technology into the corner of the electronics field that is so often overlooked

Before you all start screaming "digital" at me, that was a huge step change in audiology, but perhaps only 30% of what was really needed

We got our first pair yesterday. Definitely a niche product. Seem rather unique. The RXable ones are supposed to be available in the spring.

The Oakley thumps (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) are the mp3 and the Razrwire is the bluetooth. The thumps sound great and are quite comfy. You still get enough surrounding noise so that you DON'T HAVE TO SOUND LIKE YOU'RE YELLING when you talk while listening. I haven't tried the Razrwire yet as my phone isn't Bluetooth.

    QDO1,

I remember years ago my father who is an optometrist fit a couple of patients with the hearing aids built onto the eyewear frame. I also remember when they came in for exams there was no way of taking the hearing aid off the frames and the patients didn't have additional aids. So while I was working in teh dispensary I could hear my father yelling in the exam room during the refractions since the patient had to have their glasses off and thus their hearing aids. Like you said it never did take off really. I think that now that hearing aids have developed to such a small size there isn't the problem of fitting the temples and thus the idea of combining the two fizzled. That post just brought back that amuzing memory though!

When I first started in the business, one of AO's larger customers was a hearing aid retailer. I made lots of Sirmonts, Leading Ladies and Ronsirs with hearing aid temples.

Chris, I want one, with the MP3 player and cell phone.

those were the days. sadly they are still with us. for patients with a mechanical (not sensory) problem, the "bone conduction" aid is still used - this aid basically sits on the mastoid bone behind the ear, and transmits the sound through the bone to the cochlea. spectacles are an excelent way of holding the conductor - as the temple tips are just in the right place
