It's nice to talk about other subjects now and again than than Optics, after all we do spend all day at it!

We've been through our musical interests, we're now hearing about famous personalities, but I'd like to know what niggling things get you going.

My 'pet hate' takes place in the privacy of the rest room, but none of my restrooms at work or at home are included....I hasten to add.

What gets me is the way some people hang the toilet roll from the holder, the wrong way.

Now I can already hear some of you muttering..."What's Clive talking about?" but in my eyes, there's only one way the roll can be hung, and that's with the loose end rolling from the top and hanging FORWARD.

There is no logical reason why it annoys me when it's the 'wrong' way, apart from pure aesthetics.

Anyway, some years ago I decided I'd clean up the world of this annoying practice, I wrote to 'toilet roll' manufacturers suggesting they give instructions on the packet "HOW TO HANG YOUR NEW PURCHASE"

Most of the manufacturers didn't even have the decency to answer... but one of them did.... "Thank you for your inquiry, it has been passed to the department concerned"
    I never heard any more.

Apart from writing letters, I've been conducting a 'one man campaign' and when we ever visit anyone I make a point of checking out the 'loo' and if I have to, to correct the installation, it's amazing how many people do get it wrong, about 50%

I have had some difficult situations like on an airplane where I had to dismantle half of the wall of the restroom cubicle to get at the roll, but I did it in the end in spite of much banging on the door from the airline hostess worried if I was OK inside, I said yes.. but couldn't open the door 'till I'd got the panel back in place.

Well, I've gone on enough..... What gets you??

...Drivers who don't use their turn signals when changing traffic lanes or actually making turns. Do you get a better trade-in if the turn signals are unused?

Actually, there is one good reason to hang TP backwards... if you have a cat (or in my case kids) who like to bat the stupid roll with their paws/hands, they will find it infinitely easier to roll yards and yards of the stuff off the roll when it is hung "forwards." Hang it backwards and they have a harder time making a mess...

That said, a lot of things really get my goat... mostly when driving:
    • "YIELD" does NOT equal "STOP" (that's why they have different signs with entirely different colors and shapes to denote their designated meanings)
    • It is okay to enter the intersection on a yellow light (read: "If I'm speeding up to make the yellow, and I'm behind you, you can surely make it and should not slam on your brakes)
    • Four way stop signs ("you go," "no, you go" and so on... "Heck, I'LL GO!" :rolleyes : )
    • If you are intending to go the speed limit (or slightly slower) by all means stay in the right lane!
    • Most people aren't good drivers to begin with, much less when they're trying to talk on their cell phone at the same time! I think everyone should have cell phones and everyone should have personalized license plates... their license plate should be their cell phone number (so I can call them up when they cut me off )

Whew that felt good... thanks Clive!
    Pete

Scary oldsters who can hardly move,or count their change, hobbling to their automobile...the guy on the highway towing a boat (or trailer) who decides to pass the other guy towing a boat (or trailer) by driving one mile per hour faster until the move is accomplished (usually about 30 minutes)....people in line at the supermarket who wait until the clerk announces the total $ amount of their purchase before they start rummaging through their purse for their checkbook.

    Howdy Clive,

I'll throw in my bids for "butt chappin'" :-)

Basically it goes like this, eh hum...People in general :-) Most people and everything they do chaps my behind. I can't really narrow it down to any specifics because there are just too many.

For me, just the act of that...that breathing in and out that they do really irks me. Why don't they just stop it! :-) Don't they realize that they are ticking people off with it? Sometimes I just want to smack 'em.

I find myself on many occasions just thinking about ways I can shorten their worthless lives without getting caught :-) That toilet paper thing of yours would probably send me over the edge. Just the thought of someone putting the roll on backward would put me in a bell tower with high powered rifle shooting at the unsuspecting scurge below.

It's not that I'm a violent person it's just that I have limits to my friendliness and everything is about it :-)

Well, I have to....wait just a doggone minute there....I can see what you're doing from here and that's just...Man! I can't believe it. You...Oh Yeah! Bring it on spunky :-)

    Darris "In my belltower" Chambless

Disclaimer: this is all done in fun for those of you that may think I'm serious. If you do think I'm serious then you will need to get over it lest I track you down, gut you and field dress you for the long trip home :-)

    Love always,

    Darris C.

Clive! Toilet paper?!!! I know everyone has their pet peeves, but I have to say if that is the worst thing that happens to you consider youself lucky!! I have so many that I don't think my computer has enough memory to have me write everything.
    1. This is one of my major pet peeves.
ME: have you been a pt here before?
    PT: no but my cousin's sister-in-law's cousin's friend's grandmother has.(UGH UGH)
    2. Coughing in my face without even attempting to cover mouth with their hands (gross!)
    3. All of the previous posts dealing with driving ESPECIALLY if a cell-phone is involved.
    4. Having a pt answer a call on a cell-phone in the middle of a sale, exam,etc...
5.ME: we have no "Jane Smith" in our computer is it possible you may gone by another name?
PT: try "Jane Smith" or "Jane Jones" or "Jane Doe" so on and so on....
This is one that could go on for hours.
    6. When patients refer to the EYE doctor as the obstetrician. This one happens to us on occasion also.
    7. ME :(this one is especially annoying if you are very busy and it's a phone call)Hi, how may I help you?
PT: Well I went out to walk the dog this morning and I tripped in a hole. I am not even sure how or where that hole can from. Anyway, I sprained my ankle. As I was walking back into the house I noticed it was going to rain so I limped over to the clothes line to get them in and realized I still had the dog with me. So I took her back in, came back out to get the laundry. Anyway, I lost the screw out of my glasses do you think you could put one back in for me?
I am sure ALL of you have had that one your share of times!
7.No offense to you guys out there but I am sure the girls will share this one with me.
Is there a guy here that can work on my glasses? (UGH!!!!)
Well that is all I can think of for now.
    Have a great day!!!
    Steph

    My "Pet Peeves"
    1. Drivers with cell phones
    2. Customers with cell phones
    3. Cell phone users who put the TP on the roll backwards ;-)

Not that I have anything against the cell phones themselves - I think they're wonderful pieces of equipment. The problem is that they cause some people to abandon common sense! One of these days I'm going to design and build a device that will create interference and prevent people in my vicinity from using their cell phones. Somebody's probably already patented the idea, so I won't be marketing it... but it'll keep me happy!
Stephanie, I work with a bunch of women, and guys are always coming in wanting to be helped by them. There's this one guy who ALWAYS looks for the same lady. He even gets ticked off if she isn't there. The bright side is, his frame is a pain to adjust, so it's better her than me! But what really bites is when they request someone else, and that person ends up handing the job off to you anyway!

Strangely enough, I feel better now!

Speaking of rude drivers................One of my biggest "Pet Peeves" (aside from cell phone users) is when we are all stuck in a traffic jam on a 2-3 lane highway and some &^#$%#@ decides that he/she has the birth right to pass everyone in the breakdown lane. I, for one, will not let them in my lane when the merging begins.

The brighter side is when a tractor-trailer truck eases over on to the break down lane and the &^#$%#@ is stuck behind the truck until??????????

    Confused

    Pet peeves?
    How about:
    1) when you try to call your medical specialist and there are 8+ choices in the phone menu to pick from...and they still don't return your call for 24+ hours?
    or
    2) generic (store brands) clone-design packaging and product placement at the grocery designed to mislead you into purchasing the same, and at a higher cost than the name brand item on sale that you came into the store for.
    or
    3) buggies/carts with wobbly wheels
    or
    4) sticky doorknobs.

    (That's just today's list!)

I hate uncouth people. People who are
raw, bad taste people and dirty people who don't take care of themselves or are sloppy in appearance or don't care about things, lazy people who don't care if they ever succeed at anything in life. :(
I don't want to be around them if I can help it.
There is nothing worse than people who can't keep their word. If you can't do it, don't say it.
Or when you are out in a restaurant in their
rest room [John/Loo}and someone in there didn't wash their hands on the way out, and then when you walk past the kitchen you can see them in there cooking! :(
And when I am in a fast food place and I peek at the cooks in the back and no one has plastic gloves on and they are handling all the food? BARF
What about when you are in a public library or a superstore with at least 10 wide open, empty aisles to pass through and someone is squeezing by me when I am in very narrow aisle where i am standing; real close to me, bumping into me knocking me over, trying to get through; or someone walking down the street bumping into me on the side walk, when they have the whole world to pass through, and there is no one else near by except me and them!
    C.

    Steph,

I used to get the "obstetrician" thing alot. I just smile and tell them "I'm sorry but I'm not certified to work on anything below the bridge of the nose."

GAWD!!!! I HATE when I can hear people breathing..I don't mean regular/normal breathing I mean very LOUD irritating breathing, like the kind you can hear about 8 feet away.
AND I HATE when patients invade my personal space!!! I don't know why some feel the need to be within kissing distance while asking me a question..I will take a step back and they take a step forward so we do a lil dance around the vision center!!
AND I hate wet doorknobs in public bathrooms!!

    AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
