Child Chewing on Lenses

Is there anything out there that can be applied to eyewear to prevent a child from chewing on the lenses? We have a child 17 months old that is destroying every pair of lenses we put in front of her eyes. Lenses are mounted in a Tenny Weenie Solo Bambini and I think the child enjoys chewing on the frame but the lenses get in the way. I'm thinking something bitter that would not hurt her eyes rather than something hot :angry: that would create more problems. HELP

When I was a child I was went to a camp. We had a problem with a skunk chewing on our cabin, so our councillor applied tabasco sauce. It worked well.

Now if you did not put in the link about something hot it would have made my comment a lot more funnier.

There is a product that was applied to nails and pencils when I was at school, certainly stopped the chewing...:angry: My concern though would be that the product chosen would be in contact with the temples, and could cause further (worse) problems. Why not use a sports strap to keep them on?

I have found that the small dog training collars( the ones that shock) work very well for behavior modification.:p Look at the pharmacy for some to break a child from thumb sucking. let us know!

Actually my puppy (well he is 13) now has a habbit of leaving the yard and going for a walk. Our yard is awkward, we just cannot put a fence up. He used to never leave the yard, but as he gets older his range get further. We joked about that shock things, but could never do it.

We used to have him on a leash, but he would always wrap it around a pole.

Thanks for all the interesting comments and suggestions :D my personal idea was sheet metal screws through the temples but the mother didnt appreciate my attempt at humor at all :finger: I was hoping there was something out there that would help apparently the child has gone through two pair of lenses in two frames since the first of the year.

try soaking your glasses in bitter tasting solution like Quinine anti-malarial syrup, it will also deter parasites.:drop:

We have a patient that uses her glasses as a teething ring as well - tried an athletic eyeglass retainer that was supposed to keep the glasses on her nose - didn't work.

There is some sort of child arm restraint. You put it on and child can't bend their arms to reach the glasses. Voila! Problem solved.

The "no" thing really works well if you enforce it, but a lot of parents are horrible at that.

There's a product you can get at your local pharmacy with capsaicin that you could put on the glasses. It's a derivative of chile peppers. Yeah, that's right - it's what they put in pepper spray. Problem is that it might get on their fingers if they touch the glasses and into their eyes or mouth as well. Not such a good idea then.

Not too long ago a number of child psychologists were on the radio discussing child discipline. The only thing they all agreed on was: "Never ask a child to do anything twice."Does that tell you something?

It tells me that most, if not all child psychologists are a bunch of pansies. I got my butt tore UP when I was a kid!

Fink: The point was the psychologists were saying: "Smack 'em at the time of offence." But with today's legal climate could not say so on the air. There were about 15 of them calling in and they were all unanimous in this.

A child chewing on the lens. Maybe he/she isn't fed at home and loves the flavors of polycarbonate. If the kid feels like he needs a gourmet banquet, I do have waste bags from the Clean and Coat unit. I would definitely ask the child if he/she is planning on having kids though just to be on the safe side. :hammer:
