Advice requested for new RX

The first and only progressive lenses I have worn -- for several years -- have been Varilux Comfort. When I got my last prescription filled, the optician said that he wanted to shift me to Johnson & Johnson Definity but it was not (yet) available in my prescription.

More recently, I've read here about Varilux Ipseo. Varilux Panamic also have been recommended to me in preference to the Comfort lenses.

I have no complaints about the Comfort lenses, but would be willing to switch for better vision.

My new prescription is:

OD -7.25 = -1.00 x 180
OS -7.75 = -2.00 x 160
add +2.25

The optometrist says my prescription should remain stable for the next 5-10 years.

Before my eye examination (earlier today), I was offered the following choices (subject to my actual prescription and based upon my prior prescription which is only slightly weaker than the new one):

Varilux Ipseo 1.67; Crizal Alize $517.50

Varilux Panamic 1.67; Crizal Alize $418.50

Varilux Comfort 1.67; Crizal Alize $402.00

J&J Definity; Crizal Alize $370.00


Any advice on how to choose among these options would be appreciated.

Also, I've been frames sized 42/24.

Any advice (or questions I should ask the optician) would be appreciated.

The Ipseo is a much different lens than those, and I do not even classify in the whole progressive lens options.

If you are willing to spend the money definitely get it. I will be starting with it very soon, and the opticians that I know who have fit it say that it is by far the closest thing to single vision.

With a 42 eyesize, that's going to be difficult to get a progressive in. The Comfort and Panamic get changing pretty quickly, more quickly than the Definity.

I have no information on the Ipseo. I'm uninformed, there.

I'd go Panamic, if I were you, based on what I do know.

Are you suggesting that the optician should be putting me in a larger frame? If so, what do you suggest? Alternatively, what should I be asking the optician.

The quotes are for the lenses plus coatings (Crizal Alize).

I would suggest that with your prescription you should go with the Varilux Ipseo. Those lenses are grind on the lab depending on the personal head and eyes movement of the patient... Those are the best progressive on the market... Your Optician has to have on his practice a special instrument (Sold by Essilor) that detects and measures your head and eyes movements. And the Crial Alize is also the best AR coating for lenses on the market..

I am not an optician, and they know way better about the lenses than do I (or probably your optometrist)... If you press the Search button here and search/read the posts for each of your choices, I think the answer will become clear quickly.

Well I think the lens is a little more expensive in Canada. I would expect anywhere from $850 up.

It is a new lens and not a lot of people do it. I would try the premium, high end stores in Toronto.

First, you may realize i haven't insurance coverage.

Second, as I've said I can still see with one single vision, my new Rx notwithstanding, my announcement may be a while coming yet - sorry to keep you in suspense.
