    High myopia - Futures

Hi, I am a high myope (-15 both eyes) who likes to keep up to speed with developements that might be beneficial to me.
The two main concerns I have are reliance on glasses and Retinal tears / detachment.
I was particularly interested to hear if anyone was delveoping any of the 30-day contacts for my range of myopia (at the moment I think they stop at 12 diopters?) I would also like to hear about any devleopements on the retinal tear/detachment front - This is obviuosly a big concern for me but hearing about all of the new techniques coming out such as new viterous replacement materisals and sclera reshaping excites me tremendously -
    any thoughts would be welcome!

    Thanks :o

    .

i can tell you about the contact lenses, but not the medical stuff. if your prescription is -15.00 in both eyes, then a -12.00 contact lens wont be too far out, because the contact lens sits on the eye instead of in front of it you need less power to get the same equivelant power as your specs. a -12.00 lens would actually correct around -13.50 to -14.00 dioptres so you would only need around a -1.00 top up for critical vision i.e. driving, you could also consider gas permeable lenses ,some of the latest materials are very comfortable, and of course your prescription can be fully corrected.

See a refractive surgeon. Lensectomy may be an alternative as well as some new IOL lenses.

    in ref. to retinal detachments.

    Maybe you should breath easier:

according to the study by Hagler, most people with retinal detachments are actually Hyperopes (66% of patients in the study). Followed by emmetropes- no refractive error (27%), aphakic- no crystalline lens in the eye (9%) and only then-myopes (7%).

    Fascinating

That is fascinating research - I had spoken to a retinal specialist who was conviced the shape of the ye had little to do with retinal detachment and it was more to do with lattice degeneration. His theory was the human body would alter the shape of the retina to reflect the shape of the eye - he miight be right!

Where can I find a copy of this study

My MD believes these numbers are erroneous, and that myopes make up the largest % of this group.

You might check into VERSEYE (spelling?) it is an phakic iol for use in refractive sx, i've seen one inplanted in a -12.00, with good results. they are new. Our cornea specialist has only done a few cases. The specs are good though

    sclera reshape

I suppose the nirvana for myopic refractive correction is the reshaping of the sclera as this would address both refractive and retinal problems?

    Would this ever be possible?

I've seen a few cases too, using the Verisyse lens from AMO. Just sent a patient to the opthalmologist with a -24.00 script for the procedure, can't wait to see her for her followup post-op!
