Anyone know what Internet2 is supposed to be about?
Well, I never heard of "Internet2" before reading your post. But I used Google and this was at the top of the list:
"Led by more than 200 U.S. universities, working with industry and government, Internet2 develops and deploys advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet."

Ultrahigh-speed network to be speedier
Data to be sent using different colors of light, boosting capacity 80-fold
Updated: 7:24 p.m. ET April 26, 2006
NEW YORK - By sending data using different colors of light, operators of the ultrahigh-speed Internet2 network are hoping to boost capacity by as much as 80-fold to enable researchers to connect telescopes around the world and perform other bandwidth-intensive tasks.
The new network should be in place by fall 2007, said Douglas Van Houweling, Internet2's chief executive.
He announced the plans this week as researchers set a new networking speed record — 8.8 gigabits per second, nearing the Internet2's current theoretical limit of 10 Gbps, which is thousands of times faster than standard home broadband connections ...

Its all buzz words, marketing.
I really cant see it changing the way we use the net at all! :)

For the most data intensive scientific and engineering applications - do I really have to go there?
It would have to create new and somewhat startling possibilities.

Reminds me of pricing it shall have and also legitimacy of such movies and if so their subscription charges.
Is Al Gore taking credit for inventing Internet 2 ? Does anyone know?

What we're all used to now is known as Internet Protocol Version 4 or IPv4. "Internet 2" or IPv6, IS the next internet. As to paraphrase what I'm about to link to, this new protocol will enable faster more efficient packet transfers... basically sending and receiving information much quicker.
More FAQs are here: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Linux+IPv6...er-basics.html
I believe it to be most major companies are preparing for this. In fact the new Microsoft OS will be capable of displaying IPv6 sites as I show you here from my computer.

Do I smell a discussion on DWDM coming? There is also a big push to be able to censor the internet. Changing protocols and rendering the old protocol useless might give them the edge they need to make that happen.
Why are you dredging up five year old threads? Is it just so you can get your spam link posted?
