Backside add can not be done because then you would have to surface the front side and todays optical machines are not equiped to surface front sides.

I think maybe seanl was referring to lenses produced by non-traditional means (whereby back-side adds certainly are possible).

Chris there are CNC machines out there capable of producing front or back side progressive additions. Just not using the "traditional" equipment.
