    kappa edger problems

We have a Kappa edger and we are having a problem with lenses slipping-off 10 degrees on average. Sometimes it's poly but not always - no definite pattern to lens material and/or coatings. We have spoken to coburn, and have adjusted the back pressure, replaced thrust bearings and we will be good for awhile and then start up again.

    Any ideas out there?

It depends on what kind of leap pads your using maybe you could possibly have a bad roll? Or have you maybe switched brands of leap pads that would do it too

    Good Luck

    leap pads

A vastr majority of my troubles with lens slippage is usually due to "Bargain Basement" blocking pads. Go with the real deal...3M or nothing. Cheaper brands are often false econome

Clean dry blocks are another problem as well. I usually put freshly peeled blocks on a clean dry towel and use the other ones from the ready tray thus assured of a clean dry block

    1. How long is a "while"?
    2. What coolant are you using, in what concentration?

As far as how often-well sometimes two weeks go by and all okay then 1 or 2 jobs will do it for a few days-we call coburn, try some new adjustment and okay for a bit. This scenerio has been going on for 3 months.

This is a silly question, but is there ANY chance it is simply operator error, not paying attn for a job or two? Then when it is caught the operator is a bit more cautious, thus temporarily eliminating the problem?

I'm not familiar with the Kappa edger, I have a Gerber Professional edger, it has a theta drive unit which use 2 belts to turn the lens, if these belts are loose it creates play in the chuck, if you are able to move the chuck easily you may need to tighten these belts a bit, anyways that's my guess, hoping it helps you.

there are a few things i can think of..

    1. The engine connected to the belt that spins the lens has an electric problem.

Have a qualified tech. check it out.

    2. The grinding wheel is old. This might cause a traction problem and a slip.

    3. On the Kappa there is a micro switch with a red LED on it that indicates the kappa when and where to start spinning the lens. It is located on the left side of the chamber under the big "arm". It fails from time to time due to corrosion. Needs to be checked also.

    4. The problem might not be an edger problem but a tracer/blocker problem.

Usually, if the lens comes out of the edger and has some "unfinished" points along the edge than it's probably an edger problem. If it comes out nice and clean but still off-axis than check the tracer/blocker unit.
