We used the edge thickness calculator for minus lenses almost daily. Patients really appreciated that we could tell them the edge thickness were other stores could not. It really made us look good!

ps- last time I looked I did not see it up there. I hope it comes back soon! I was thrilled to see the wrap calculator.

Stop it, you are guys are making me blush. ;)

Yes, the thickness calculator is back up. I reprogrammed it with a more accurate thickness routine over the weekend that now also computes center thickness. I was going to have it draw lens cross-sections, but I don't think Steve has the PHP image functions I need in order to do this installed.

As for the Tilt and Wrap Calculator, it's based upon Dr. Michael Keating's methods for lens tilt compensation, for those of you interested in the implementation details. Of course, for the best optical performance in wrapped sunlenses, I would recommend lenses specifically designed for the application, such as SOLA's Spazio (which will also compensate for off-axis performance, prism, and lens thickness) or whatever similar product your supplier of choice offers.

It might interest you to know that not only is Darryl everything said in this thread, but that I first recruited him for SOLA because of the quality of posts he was making on OptiBoard at the time.

People do read these forums and good things can happen. :)

Yeah, unfortunately my sense of humor doesn't translate well into forum postings. For instance, much of my humor requires frequent use of the blank stare of disbelief and that sort of thing (you know, the look of "What color is the sky in your world, anyway?" or "Maybe in the fantasy land you live in, but here on Earth..."). It's a subtle art.

Very true. Hard to believe I've been hanging around here for close to ten years.

I agree Darryl seems to be a great optician. Thank you for all your informative posts. It is nice to see opticians of your caliber. I have put together some of the very same calculators in html and javascript. I use them on my office intranet. I have made them available as freeware. Enjoy everyone there is more to come and feel free to post them to your sites.

    www.onlineopticianry.com/media/formulas.zip

    Included

    1.) Back Vertex Power Calculator
    2.) Prism Calculator
    3.) Prism Thickness Calculator
4.) Thompsons Formula for Obliquely Crossed Cylinders (add 2 Rx's together)
    5.) True Power Calculator
6.) Martins Formula for Lens Tilt (working on a new version)

I am working on more advanced calculators. The most current one is the High Wrap Rx compensation Calculator wich will give you the Rx to grind into a lens to get the prescribed Rx from a frame with high amounts of wrap.

Actually, I haven't dispensed or fabricated a pair of eyeglasses in over nine years, so my skills as an optician have probably waned over the years. :(

The one I have on my site is pretty accurate, so you can use it to validate your results if you need to.

Is this something that ever happens to people on this Board, or are you just speaking hypothetically?

Another forum I belong to has a FORUM ATTACK SYSTEM, maybe we could implement something like that. ;)
