    Ellipse v Piccolo (again?)

    Hi All

Would someone please tell me how these two compare as I can get the Piccolo far cheaper:)
    (I know heights differ 14/16)

The Ellipse has a viewing angle of 140 degree
Looking at the cyl map of the Piccolo it looks similar

Shamir claim the piccolo is "soft" (difficult I thought in a short corridor)

Is the Ellipse worth the extra & why?

    Thanks

I have seen the mapping for both lenses and the piccolo looks like it has a wider reading corridor and softer distance...

I have used both lenses. I am a big fan of the Piccolo. I have had very good results with the Ellipse. I will only use the Ellipse if the seg height drops below 15., or if someone "Must have Varilux, Blah,Blah, Blah". Try both, the Shamir will keep you happy, and if you need less then 16,15 try the Ellipse or even the Hoya Summit CD=which is also a good lens.

I am a picollo fan. I enjoy using picollo and it has pretty good availablilty. I am looking forward to using the new 8 base polaroid lens. I will say that I have also used ellipse with no trouble, like previous posts I use it when lower then 16 seg...must say I hate to even sell lenses with segs so low but as a dress pair they are ok if someone has occupational lenses for reading or computer use. In any case good luck and good post.

I used the ellipse and was not happy! I told my lab and they made me a pair of ovation @ 15 hi and I love them. the ovation is the best lens I ever had and I think your pt. would find it very easy to apt. easier than the comfort.:hammer:with the comfort your only paying for the name the lens is over 13 years old try the ovation and you will never be happyer. I know if you call nazareth optix they will make you a pair for free that's kind of lab they are 10

I am a first time progressive wearer and licensed optician. I put on my Ellipse and have not had a bit of trouble or need to accomodate to the lens. It has been great since day one!

I have not had the opportunity to try the Piccolo, but am VERY happy with my Ellipse.

I have had good luck prescribing summit CD from Hoya, at seg heights from 14 to 17. I have sold 6 or more, with no problems. I tried Ellipse on two patients and neither liked it. One unhappy patient was unhappy with the solaone at 18 (1st frame), the ellipse at 17(second frame), and as a last resort I switched him to a liberty at 18(same 2nd frame), and he was VERY happy. The other ellipse dropout was switched to FT28 and is happy. I know I probly just had bad luck with the patients who didn't like ellipse- it might very well be a great lens design.
But I know the summit CD is a good lens- its made people happy 6+ times in a row. I have not yet tried the picollo.

Heinera=Give the Piccolo a try, I think that you will be pleased. I also have used the Hoya Summit Cd with good results.

    conclusion

Well , the conclusion is 16 mm fitting height = Piccolo and 14-15 mm fitting height = Ellipse.

What about the distance zone? 6 mm is enough or not for Piccolo and Ellispe.

The biggest problem of Short Corridor & Super Short Corridor PALs is that the distance zone is very narrow if compared with semi-short corridor PALs like Excelite Minuo , Nikon Presio i13 , Tokai Progressive 13.

We've actually been using the Definity Short as our short corridor of choice to good success lately.

At ECCA, our short corridor is the AOcompact Ultra. I have been fitting it recently and we have a minimum fitting height of 13 mm with it, but i have yet to fit it quite that low. I try to stay at 15mm and only offer it to first time prog wearers and those who are pretty much under 45. I've only had one non-adapt so far with it, but I am really really picky on who I actually let have it. So far so good.

15mm fitting ht. I've had no problems fitting it at 14mm. The Definity Short is my prefered short corridor PAL. Tried the Ellipse (not bad), Piccolo (about the same as Ellipse), Summit CD (three dispenses, three non-adapts that all went into the Definity Short without issue).

I'll pay the slight price increase for the Definity Short - great design, wide intermediate and reading and very conforming distance.

the Definity short is really one of the few short corridor designs which actually has a true intermediate.

Ellipse vs. Compact Ultra and Excelite's Minuo

Would someone please provide me with a comparison of the Ellipse and the Compact Ultra and the Minuo? I am familiar with comparsions between the Ellipse and the Piccolo but have not seen or read any using these other two lenses.

    Thanks for the information

I may be the only on this board fitting the Minuo, so I will tell. I was looking for a short-corridor Trivex lens. The lab manager recommended the Minuo because he was wearing one and liked it, it has some features like variable inset and multiple BCs that contradict it's reasonable price. So I fit a few - including myself. Good stuff. Only available in Trivex and 1.60; although their website says CR-39 too. Excelite is TOG's US subsidiary, so it's made by a big well known (especially in Asia) lens mfg.

Compact Ultra - I fit one only. Myself. Skip it, there are better. I have seen a few non-adapts from other places, though

Ellipse - Just a great lens, no problems at all.

Smallfit - Just a great lens, no problems at all. 40% off Ellipse pricing

Hoya Summitt CD - pretty good lens - just too short for any intermediate.

I also hear (and see) that the Ovation can be fit successfully as low as 15mm. One of my labs has no problems guaranteing an Ovation at 15mm.

My opinion is that the Ovation is the Best Essilor lens made (I'm including "Varilux" lenses too) prior to purchase of Definity.

Another opinion, since you guys are such good listeners:D. You should be fitting these short corridor lenses until the FH gets to 20mm or the add gets to 2.25. Your patients will be happier. Wider reading, less eye travel, newer lens designs, and not much loss at intermediate except at high adds.

I will agree with you that the Ovation is the Best Essilor lens ever made. I will also agree that the Ellipse is a great lens. The only advantage the Ovation has over the Ellipse, is it has its ADS version for quite a bit cheaper than the Ellipse 360.

I havn't read any of the posts, BUT the Ellipse is by far a better lens. It is worth the extra. Everything about it is smoother, ans will make your patient more happy.

This is what I understand about the Piccollo-good near and intermediate, okay distance.

Ellipse- great distance, okay near, poor intermediate.

Hoya CD- I have a pair of these. They seemed swimmy at first but I got used to them. Can't raise my head at all without getting into the intermediate area. I have them at 18 so I can't say how they would do lower. I do know several people I work with got a free pair and no one loved them and a couple of people disliked them. I rarely use them.

Ovation- Good lens but I have never fit lower then 17. Maybe I should try it. It's the lens Costco uses.

Definity Short- I have a pair at 17. Good lens, has a better intermediate then the Ellipse. I do notice that I can't raise my head at all without getting into the intermediate area.

GT2- I also have a pair. I think they are at 17 or 18. Seems fine but reading area is not huge.

Sola One- have never fit lower the 18. Very good near and intermediate. Distance is okay but not as good as some. I had a pair and liked them a lot.

Phyiso- Had a pair at 18 or 19. Great distance, good near and intermediate. They say this can be fit at 17 but I like it best at 19 and above.

We use the Ellipse quite a bit, with great responce, I'd love to try the Piccolo, but am having trouble getting it. I've only personally fit the compact ultra a couple times, and one came back not liking them, so I haven't really gone much further with it.

I use a lot of the Piccolo, and I also use the Ellipse.

My rule of thumb has been:

Those who want the best distance (typically your myope) Ellipse was designed maximizing the distance.

Those who need the widest/best intermediate and near, the Piccolo works best. The Piccolo has a wider reading area than the Ellipse does at 14. I have never had a non-adapt to either lens.

Because of our deals we've worked out, we generally use the Sola Compact Ultra and GT2 on nearly everyone.

We have had very few non-adapts on either one.
