ESSILOR ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF 2004 OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY GRANTS
THREE SCHOOLS AWARDED $20,000 FOR COMMITMENT TO ADVANCEMENT IN THE INDUSTRY


ACADEMY 2004, TAMPA, FL - (December 10, 2004) – Today at the American Academy of Optometry, Essilor of America, Inc. announced the recipients of its 2004 Essilor Optical Technology Grants. These grants are awarded to schools and colleges of optometry that exhibit their commitment to growing the industry through new advancements. This year’s winners included:

• University of Houston College of Optometry for renovation of the Ophthalmic Optics Laboratory. The University is supplying matching funds.
• Southern California College of Optometry for modernization of the Ophthalmic Optics Laboratory.
• Pacific University College of Optometry for modernization of the Ophthalmic Optics Laboratory.

Each school received $20,000 grants to apply toward continuing industry education.

“Essilor is always thrilled to help support the schools and colleges who know the importance of solid and progressive education in this industry,” said Dr. Rodney Tahran, vice president of professional relations and clinical affairs for Essilor of America. “This is the third year Essilor has offered the grants. We hope to be able to continue this tradition in order to aid schools in their efforts to advance in the field of optometry.”

Entry requirements included a description in 1,000 words or less why the school needs and deserves the grant. Applications were judged on the school’s commitment to the growth of premium optical technology as well as how the money will help the school elevate the standards and visibility of ophthalmic dispensing for students. The panel of judges included Essilor executives and independent optometrists.
