Happy Birthday United States Marine Corps!

The USMC just celebrated another birthday. The Commandant of the Marine Corps sent all the troops home and abroad the following message. My son forwarded this to me and Shwing said he thought I should post it.It is here:

If I remember my history right, the Marines were founded by John Paul Jones.

    Bravo John Paul, Bravo Marines.

    Chip,

John Paul Jones was not involved in the founding of the Marine Corps. We were formed under a directive from the Continental Congress and were under the command of Capt. Samuel Nicholas. Some Marine Detachments did later serve under the command of John Paul Jones.

An interesting side story about John Paul Jones.............

John Paul Jones is buried in the United States Naval Academy Chapel. What is interesting is the story of how his remains were located. He died all but broke in Paris in 1792. He was buried by the French government in an unmarked grave,or at least forgotten.(I was told it was unmarked at the time of its recovery c.1905) A former West Point graduate was serving as ambassador to France and undertook the search for his remains. With some great detective work he found it. Because the casket was lead, and filled with alcohol,Jones was able to be positively identified. How is a mystery to me because no one was living in 1905 that could have ever seen him......but it was id'd positively(probably because not many caskets were filled with alcohol.

At any rate, the remains were found and got a Naval escort across the Atlantic, and were interred at the Naval academy in a ceremony presided over by President Theodore Roosevelt. The tomb is an imressive place, with a Marine guard 24 hrs a day. If you ever get to Annapolis make the trip to the Academy chapel and you will find it.

I saw this bumper sticker today and thought it was great:
