    What are you listening/playing lately?

As musician and music down loader I am stunned at the lack of imagination in today's so called music scene. The 60' were the zenith of popular music as far as I am concerned. Granted there are some songs and groups that come through but nothing like that age.

I really got into the OJ's for a while until Little Feat was at a Chili cookoff at the Park. What a great group and even though they are part of the geezers and wheezers tour like the Stones, they can still make ya move your feet. O the memories.

    I am also heavy into:
    Stones
    Beatles ( later years)
Woodstock (1969 and a prime example of the complexity of music then)
    Aerosmith
    Allman Brothers
    B. B. King
    BTO
    Black Crows
    Blues Traveler
    Clapton
    Dire Straits
    Santanna
    Joe Cocker
    Graham Central Station
    Marshall Tucker
    Foghat
    Michael McDonald
    Sly and the Family Stones
    SRV
    Sting
    Three Dog Night
Temptations( or anything with Jamerson on Bass)
    Warren Zevon ( RIP)
    Van Morrison
    ZZ Top

    Anybody else play?

Your taste in music mirrors my own. I'd add:

    The Kinks
Love (the absolute best of the 'psychedelic' bands')
    Louis Armstrong
    Ray Charles
    Wille Nelson
    Natalie Merchant
    Bob Dylan
Tom Petty (with and without the Heartbreakers)
    Bruce Springsteen
    Badfinger
    Phish
    Simon & Garfunkel
    Paul Simon
    The Yardbirds
    The Who
    Eric Clapton
    Johnny Cash

And a bunch more that I'll think of later.

I am getting all into my iTunes but am dissapointed in the huge holes they have in their 80's selection. My most recent downloads include:

    Klymaxx
    The Dazz Band
    Level 42
    Flock of Seagulls
    New Order
    Book of Love
    The Bangles
Wham (before they got all day glo)

But some of the old alternative 80's standards are not available like
    Icicleworks
    Midge Ure
    XTC ....

Sigh, when I am appointed Supreme Dictator I will make them carry all the stuff I like. Now I just need a pink iPod and I am set.

Steve, did you notice that you and rep AGREED!! ;) I like lots of those bands too-best concert I ever saw was The Who in 1989-for my 21st birthday. Roger Daltry sang for 4 hours and we danced our butts off!

I'll throw out a couple of indies that I feel have mass appeal, not fabricated "indy" bands.

Jawbreaker- as well as their lead singers new band, Jets to Brazil

Fifteen- as well as anything by singer Jeff Ott

Rancid- Despite the unappealing name they are probably the best musicians out of any punk band ever. Their previous incarnation Operation Ivy.

The Weakerthans- John K. Samson has an amazing voice. A big stretch musically from his previous band, Propagandhi. They are Canucks too.

Bad Religion-The grandfathers of modern day punk. Every album has be terrific.

Some albums may be hard to track down but they are a refreshing alternative to the lip-synched, manufactured **** polluting our airwaves currently.

    Gee I thought

Johnny Ramon was the father of punk music.

Steve and I agree on a lot more than you think.

    That was my rock list.
I am also into R & B and Blues when I am in the mood.
    That would include:
    Stevie Wonder
    Ray Charles
    Buddy Guy
    Bootsy Collins
    Robert Cray
    Steve Miller Band
Peter Framption ( Do you feel like I do in particular)
    3 doors down ( Kryptonite)
    James Brown
    Neville Brothers
Lynard Skinnard /Allman Brothers( southern rock)
    Talking Heads
    Commander Cody
    Fabulous Thunderbirds
Alannah Myles ( Black Velvet in particular)
    Aretha Franklin
    Atlanta Ryythm Section
Bad Company ( one I forgot)
    Brothers Johnson
    Isley Brothers
    and the list goes on.............

10,000 maniacs (sorry Steve, Natalie wasn't as good without them)
    Elvis Costello
    Spirit
    Good Charlotte
    Dave Brubeck
    Talking heads

    Steve,
Who/what were "Love"? Never heard of them, and I thought I heard 'em all.

Love (with frontman Arthur Lee) was one of the most incredible bands to come out of the LA scene in the late '60s. They were one of the Rolling Stonse favorite bands and Mick Jagger even 'appropriated' the idea for 'She's a Rainbow' from the Love song 'She Come in Colors'.

Love's 'Forever Changes' album is in my all-time top ten list and was rated by Rolling Stone Magazine as the 18th best album ever and the best from any of the psychedelic bands.

The main reason they never gained widesapread fame is that Arther Lee was rather eccentric and didn't like to travel. So they rarely toured and consequently their major fame stayed in the West Coast.

There are a number of bands that could lay claim to pioneering punk music, my statement was to reflect Bad Religion's influence on "pop punk" or "SoCal punk". Sorry for any confusion.

I can't believe I forgot Steely Dan and Stevie Ray Vaughan and the others as well. The only ones on this list I haven't heard much of is Rush, AC/DC and Metallica.

Believe it or not, there's a surprisingly large sampling at walmart.com ($0.88 each). You can listen to 30 second samples. They remind me of the Amboy Dukes, a little.

Ok, now WE are agreeing!! :bbg: This begs the question, how old are you? I will step right up and say I am 36. Those musical choices make me think perhaps I thought you were old (and crotchety! ;) ) and this is not so....

    New:
The Worlds Greatest Fishing Band wgfb.com

    Classic:
    Steeley Dan
    David Grissman
    Dan Fogelberg
    The Little River Band

I wish I could hear my older music more often but a lot of it is on cassette tapes and nearly everything I have to play music on now is in Compact Disc format.

    Rep,

Formal training was jazz guitar, but lead guitar, playing hard driving and/or melodic rock & roll, is my forte. Unfortunately we're in a R&R drought, and you have to go to Europe to make a living playing jazz.

I've been spinning these records on my Rega turntable and cd player as of late...

    Roadwork_Edgar Winter's White Trash Vinyl 1972 Live
If your not dancing on the table after Still Alive and Well, Back in the USA, and R&R Hoochie Koo (Johnny sits in) you'd better call a doctor. Rick Derringer plays and also produced.

Paridise and Lunch_Ry Cooder CD 1974
I never cared much for Cooder until I heard "Buena Vista Socoal Club" from 1997. Hear "Jesus on the Mainline" and "Ditty Wah Ditty" on the same cd. Well recorded.

Verve Jazzmasters 11_Stephane Grappelli cd 1997
    Jazz Violin at its best.

No name album aka white album_Beatles CD 1968
I've been playing Disk 2 frequently since I upgraded the cd player and amplification three months ago, and I still keep hearing something new every time. I think George Martin should have been knighted, not Paul.

Dirt Track Date_Southern Culture on the Skids CD 1995
Very Link Wray-ish which is a good thing. Have a party and charge admission at the door.

Nighthawks at the Diner_Tom Waits CD 1975
Life according to Waits. I wonder if Bukowski would approve.

King does the King's Things_Albert King Vinyl 1969
    Albert King covers Elvis. Really.

Searching for Smplicity_Greg Allman CD 1997
Very nice version of Whippin' Post.
