    Essilor Introduces Varilux® Panamic® Airwear® Polarized Gray

    ESSILOR INTRODUCES VARILUX® PANAMIC® AIRWEAR® POLARIZED GRAY
    Most Technologically Advanced PAL Incorporates Airwear® Polarized Lenses

    DALLAS - (July 22, 2004) – Available immediately, presbyopes can enjoy great vision in gray polarized sunglasses that also protect them in possible high impact situations. Essilor of America is combining Varilux® Panamic®, its technologically superior PAL design, with polarized technology and Airwear®, the only lens material that provides the unmatched combination of comfort, cosmetics and safety. By incorporating the anti-reflective properties of Essilor’s Crizal® Alizé™, bothersome reflections are reduced even further and the lens is easier to clean, making it the ultimate sunwear for comfortable outdoor wear and safe driving.

    “Presbyopes are not slowing down. Outdoor activity, and the desire to wear trendy, lighter and thinner lenses, is requiring our industry to meet the lifestyle demands of these patients,” said Mike Daley, president of Essilor Lenses. “We’re doing just that with the introduction of Varilux® Panamic® Airwear® Polarized Gray, and the timing of a summer launch works well for ECPs making lens recommendations associated with the season.”

    The product’s parameters are +6.00D to –10.00D power range, -4.00 cylinder, and +.75 to +3.50 add (in 0.25 steps). The diameter is 75/80 mm.

    Southern College Of Optometry Wins Varilux® Optometry Super Bowl XIII

    SOUTHERN COLLEGE OF OPTOMETRY WINS
    VARILUX® OPTOMETRY SUPER BOWL XIII

    DALLAS – (July 22, 2004) – This year’s Varilux® Optometry Super Bowl did not disappoint. In one of the most informational and energetic sessions of the 107th Annual American Optometric Association (AOA) Congress and 34th Annual American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) meeting, Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis upset Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) in Fullerton for the coveted cup. This is the second consecutive year SCO has won. A record crowd of more than 1,200 turned out to support the 19 schools and colleges of optometry that participated. This event continues to be an avenue that is educational for students, while giving them an opportunity to interact with their peers.

    One question from this year’s Superbowl was, “The presence of whorl like lesions at the level of the basal epithelial cells of the cornea is typical of what type of corneal dystrophy?” The answer was, “Anterior Basement Membrane.”

    Kari Burchett of SCO is this year’s Varilux® Optometry Super Bowl champion and the first woman to win. Jeff Wilson of SCCO placed second.

    “The crowd support for these students grows in numbers and energy each year,” said Rod Tahran O.D., F.A.A.O., vice-president of professional relations and clinical affairs for Essilor of America. “We are thrilled to be able to host this much-anticipated event as it’s just as exciting for us as I’m sure it is for these students.”

    This year’s panel of judges included:
    • Irvin Borish, O.D.
    • George Foster O.D., Dean, College of Optometry, Northeastern State University and President of ASCO;
    • Lisa Wade O.D., M.B.A., Vice President Institutional Advancement, Southern College of Optometry;
    • Richard L. Wallingford, O.D., President-elect, American Optometric Association (AOA)
    • James Thimons, O.D., Executive Director of TLC Connecticut and Medical Director of Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut.

    The event was hosted by David Siebel, O.D., Chair, Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the AOA.
