@avalanche I also discussed this with my girlfriend, who is also an optician.
She told me that companies like Esslior offer refresher coarses. At least they used to.
So that might be another angle.
I see you are from Alkmaar, I'm also from Holland.
There are not a whole lot of resources available. Save from the optician courses offered; Zadkine and Dutch Health Tech Acadamy (DHTA) there are in...
I hope I don't get burned for reviving this thread...
I happend to stumble on this thread while searching for an Optiboard like forums for OTs
But I've followed a similar path. Perhaps my story...
Great article. I often (read: always) get angry faces when I mention glass as an option.
With glass selection becoming smaller the price goes up.
I can understand employers preferring to sell...
Can't you order a nw one from Luxottica?
If I'm correct I ordered the same model for parts a few weeks ago.
I'm from Holland though so I'm not sure if you're able to get it where you are from.
Depends on a number of factors.
Of course the cheepst for the client is a single vision lens.
But that's not alwasys an option, with bifocals for example, it just looks better with two bifocal...
Well, I didn't think an iPad would be a substitue for a laptop. And quite frankly it isn't. But it does add a lot.
The iPad is capable of all the small tasks one can imagine, checking mail, youtube,...
@Wes:
I know, sadly I have to agree with you.
During my education I found that certain students are only after the certification in the end, tests are made, barely, and then forgotten. ...
I agree on the education. But still...
Here in Holland you can do two things if you want to be an optician go to school or learn from the boss. Most big companies like Pearle and Specsavers have...
That's ever so true. Few people really know what it means to be an optician. Some think that all we do is restock frames. Nice...
Every once in a while, when I feel the need, I grab a piece of paper...
Nah, I can't say it's wrong. At the end of the day we're running a business, not charity.
Even though our work resembles social work every now and then ^_^
Diabetic patients are ususally fracted...
I can't tell you the chemical propetries, I'm in a train right now travelling towards my (too short) vacation. I might have more info back home.
I do know that Trivex is extremely durable. Rudy...
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
I'll go see of I can find an old horn frame to experiment with. This are some handy skills. I've asked around at school and most opticians send them to a special repair...
We have a little workbench in the front of the shop for small repairs and frame adjustment. In the back we have the complete workbench.
I'm used to open workbenches, and I don't mind people...
That's a classic. Even in my humble four years experience.
I had about the same one, with a really annoying woman who was getting really on my nerves.
She kept complaining about everything, the...
I'm back ^_^
Been stuck in an internetless void for a while.
Anyway, I did a quick scetch and uploaded it as an attachment.
One break is on the left nasal side of the frame. Quite a clean...
Hmm, I watched a documentary on telly yesterday. It was about the cost of a pair of glasses. Nice. To be honest the documentary was rubbish, they concluded that a brand frame was the same material as...
Gah, I understand that one needs to be client friendly, but there are limits.
Closing time is closing time, I don't look at at minute more.
Imagine it the other way. Closing at 1745 when you...
I've had bad experience with hot tap water. Once had a customer returning a pair of glasses with cracked coating.
He used hot water to clean them. Well, they were clean, no doublt about that.

"Hi, I'd like to buy a screw? I'm going on vacation and I'd like a spare... Two? No one is fine. Why would I...
That is true. Years ago we made soap at elementary school.
Indeed, the sole purpose of soap is to dissolve oil to wash it away. Often ashes were added to make it scrub better, talk about abrasive....
Thank's, I've send him a PM. ^_^
I've worked with Airlock frames for quite some time. Never had any problem mounting the frame. One just has to be carefull and use the right tools.
The nailclipper from Marchon isn''t even good...
I like this, I concur, clients should be well instructed on the cleaning of the lenses.
A lot of people think that paying €350,- for lenses will automaticly keep them scratch free...
I personally...
