Hi I am new here.

I have been wearing progressive (with ormex lens which was suggested by the optician after I chose the frame - a small frame) for 3-4 years.

After reading about Varilux Panamic recently - I haven't read up on other brand BTW - I became interested in Varilux Panamic.

(Q1)Assuming that I will find a frame that I like with fitting height 0f 18mm, which *lens material* I should use for Panamic for the following prescipriton?

Sph Cyl Axis Prism Add
R: +1.00 -0.75 150 - -
L: -0.25 -0.50 040 - +150

(Q2)A new frame I found and like has fitting height of 17mm and so I am thinking to just give up and Panamic in order to use this frame - I plan to do a computer pair regardless using the frame I have (fitting height of 15mm). If so, what types instead of Varilux Panamic would be good? I don't have to stick to Varilux brand. ANy good one is fine. And what lens material (CR 39 or Orma or higher index; see above prescription)?

(Q3)For the computer pair, I have a frame with fitting height of 15 mm. I have no clue what brand and type and lens mterial i should use. Someone suggested me Sola Access (probably polycrabonate htough she didn't sya it). From I have read, I think I should avoid polycarbonate. I'd like to know what to use.

I wonder whether I should be starting a new thread instead of responding here.

Your Rx is low enough for Cr39. I'd save on material and go for a good AR product.

Sola Access is good and wide, but it depends on your computer needs. It's not good if you need to see across the room.

17 mm fitting height is technically a "short corridor" number. Technically, you should try the Shamir Piccolo, Essilor Ellipse, Gradal Brevity, etc. etc. Really, most are good, and we tend to split hairs and talk about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, when it comes to progressive designs!

For your dress pair of eyewear I would recommend the Shamir Piccolo, it is newer technology and I had a virtually non-existant non-adapt percentage with this lens. It has a fitting height of 16. For your computer pair I would recommend the Shamir office, which has clear edge to edge distortion free vision with clarity up to 13ft. Fitting height is 16mm lower and 13mm upper. I was so pleased with patient feedback that I ended up recommending the Shamir line exclusively to my clientele. Hope this helps

Well, I am getting into programming work, i.e work as a programmer (got degree in recently; am disappointed that I wasn't aware about prescription computer pair option until now - would have save me neck pain ) but my work environment may be such that it may be wise not to ignore people passing by from distance beyound 7ft. Beside, I would like to see as far as possible in school computer lab - I still take some coureses. Sola Access gives 7ft, I was told. So I guess, for computer pair, I should go for 13ft of Shamir Office that DaQuano mentioned. Should I put AR for computer pair? The monitors are all LCDs nowadays. But may be AR would be necessary for reading well.

Yes, I was suggested Ellipse. (I guess it's the same level as Shamir Piccolo, right?.) Is Ellipset Varilux or Essilor ? (I do understand that Varilux is manufcturd by Essilor.)

yes, I have been splitting hair, more than th opticains since I came to know about different options (that no optician bothere to tell me in the past) but didn't know enough. But I am learning ... from this forum.

If I were to find a frame with 18mm fiting height, would you recommend me to go for Varilux Panamic over Ellipse, right? Then, what would be Shamir equivalent? What would be the AR name? Would it be as good as Crizel and Crizel Alize of Varilux?

Okay.

Last night, I started thinking whether I should just not bother wearing dress pair. Before I got into computer programming, I used to not wear any eye glasses except when I studied. At that time, I wasn't wearing progressive. The I started wearing at all time and found out that the new prescipriton I got was pretty good for looking at computer but was having a hard time reading stuff put next to the computer monitor while working on the computer. I had to rely on multiple books and notes that were spread out when learning programing languages (coding) and so it's not like close-up reading.

I am very happy to hear that 13 ft distance of Shamir Office. It beats Sola Access's 7ft.

I don't understand the terms "16mm lower" and "13mm upper" My optician only use the term "fitting height".

Though the frame I was initially thinking for computer pair has a fitting height of 15mm - measured from pupil to the bottom edge of the frame, alternatively, I can use the other frame which I was I initially thinking to use for dress pair, i.e which has 17mmm (if I remember correctly; it may be 16mm fitting height according the optician's measurment).

For a dress pair, whether I wear it on regular bases or not, but I will use it for night driving, I am thinking to put some time to look for a frame that would work for Varilux Panamic or Shamir equivalent to that. What would that be in Shamir? I will do a pair for Sunglasses too.

What would be the name of AR for Shamir products?

13mm and 16mm is the fitting height. That means to get the best use out of the Shamir office lens, ideally your pupil should sit 13mm high from the bottom of the lens and 16mm low from the top of the lens. I definately think to fit all aspects of your vision requirements a dress pair and an office pair are in order. For your dress pair if you have a fitting height of 19mm or above then the Shamir Genesis would work. If the fitting height is 16mm or above then the short corridor Shamir Piccolo would work well for you. For your sunglasses the Shamir Genesis is available in a polarized lens or the Shamir Attitude is avaible for high fashion sunglass wrap frames in a short corridor polarized lens. As for the AR availability that strictly depends on what lab your optician is using. Look for a hydrophibic and oleophobic AR. These typically come with a 2yr warranty. Kudos to you for educating yourself before buying. I wish more consumers had your determination. Happy progressive hunting!

Varilux Panamic can fitting at 17 mm

Dear amanda,

1. Varilux Panamic can fitting at 17 mm and still have overall performance to read newspaper better or same like the most of short corridor PALs.

2. I recommended you to going for Varilux Panamic Orma Crizal Alize'

3. For Computer and read a lot , I recommended Essilor InterView 080. This lens is nearly not have any distortion.

4. For work station computer all day long , I recommend Essilor 130.

All these other lenses being mentioned are 3rd generation progressive lenses or prior. Shamir is a 4th generation. Truly the newest in technology. The Shamir Office gives you edge to edge distortion free vision for consistent intermediate to close vision with up to 13ft clarity in the distance. The Shamir Genesis (full corridor) gives you edge to edge distortion free vision above the 180 as well as the Shamir Piccolo (short corridor) for your smaller frames. Hope this helps Amanda.
