Has anyone ever heard of a "European Saftey Bevel"? Do they safety bevel lenses differently in Europe as compared to America?

beveling
:D From one who has beveled 10s of thousands of them, number one is just from the standpoint of looks, you would bevel rather then have a ragged edge. Second, in the old days a lot of lenses were inserted from the back of the frames, which meant you had to put your thumb and fingers on the back bevel, imagine if it was not beveled. Third was the point already stated, especially with a close fitting frame, it might be rather bothersome to the person wearing it, more so if it was a very high minus. I think there were also some possible safety issues that came to light, as the front of the lenses were usually beveled also,as to what might happen upon impact if an object hit the bevel and it was not smooth.
