    Unknown progressive

Dealing with a progressive with an unknown symbol. It looks like D7 but the D is slightly leaning to the right and the 7 is leaning slightly to the left an touching the D about 3/4 up. Any ideas?

how old is the lens? is it a high RX? is there a 4 next to the 7?

Zeiss Digital and Definity both had/have D symbol. 1.74 material would have a 74 after it.

There's also the Signet Armorlite "Directek" which has a symbol that looks like a lower-case d with a hat and its symbol for 1.74 is just a 7

Rx is about 4 years old and polycarbonate.

Then you're likely never going to figure out what lens it is unless you can contact the optician who fitted it or the lab that made the original order. It's either a discontinued style or some manufacturers house-brand PAL.

If we don't get a post every other week about this...

Why do we care to know?

Just put the patient in a good PAL and be done with it.

this business is rampant with old people who insist "my old glasses were better" and won't settle for anything less than the exact same thing they are used to wearing, whether it is objectively better or not.

My approach: use the better-design lenses so you know that's not the factor in their dissatisfaction. Chasing PAL designs is a fool's errand.

I'm going to use the art of meme to describe the scenario I believe op is finding themselves in:

exactly. it's like selling someone a car, explaining to them all it's robust safety features, that it gets better gas milage, etc, and they still return it because the buttons on the radio are different.

                            This is the way.

In the future, before you do all this legwork for free, offer to research and fit their "old" progressive lens design as a +$300 "special order" over your favored lens. Then see how much they prefer it.

For good measure, I often tell such patients it'll take at least a month on top of the special order charge.

Also, if you are truthfully familiar with the majority of reliable lens options, then you could matter of fact tell them, if you don't know the lens option they're using, odds are it's a generic and/or bog standard anyway, whatever you give them is an upgrade.
