HELP need glasses for football helmets

Back when I played football I wore cr39 lenses and a metal frame with a pair of croakies on the back. Now such a set up would be viewed as child abuse.

Liberty and Wiley X sports frames use to work with football helmets. However the newest helmets have much more padding and much tighter fight. None of the frames made for football helmets seem to fit with these.

What are people doing out there? Does anyone know a good frame for modern football helmets?

This particular patient is a smaller kid, but this is not a problem thats going away I'm afraid. Maybe he will try contacts

I had this issue just last week. Eight year old with new very very nice helmet, very well padded, very expensive. The helmet had a visor, which is removeable only by removing a few screws. No way to put the helmet on over goggles and no way to put goggles on with the helmet on. I had no answer with that helmet. Mom was going to think about contact lenses.
I interested to hear what others do.

liberty sport makes a "Helmet Spex" but it sounds like even that's not working. You're saying the kind with no temples and just a strap still won't fit properly?
For Athletes of all ages who prefer a goggle fit under their helmets.

Buy best unbreakable eyewear frames photochromic frames and kids safety glasses from Flex Frames in Plantation, FL. Get eyeglass lenses for high prescription.

If you don't need them to be safety glasses this might be an option. It used to be Miraflex, that company went under and they restarted as the brand flex frames.

CME- What are the parents thinking?

An eight year old should not play contact sports that require a helmet.

I'm assuming this is for football.

Their bones need to develop more as well. Weight lifting too young can stunt growth.

My Aunt's father was a beloved football coach/AD at the high school I spent 5 of the happiest years of my life attending before graduating in 1975.

(The stadium is named in his honor.)

He was very much against tackle football for any kid until post adolescence as Pop Warner programs sprang up in the 60's and 70's.

He was ahead of his time.

That said- the helmet spec is the best I've hear of. Contacts for older kids as helmets improve also seems like the only option in the future as fogging will happen.

It's really none of my business if they choose to let their kid play football. I'd venture to say that they bought him the best helmet on the market, I believe it is the $500 range, so safety is a concern of theirs.

I've started suggesting they try contacts. These helmets leave no room for even snug sports glasses. Would hate to try to train an 8 year old to wear contacts though and trust they will maintain a healthy wearing schedule and good hygiene with them, but there's not a whole lot of options.

Was looking into getting Rec Specs in office for all the patients that ask for sports goggles, and the minimum buy in order was 24 pieces?? Have any of yall stocked these frames in your office, and did you actually have to purchase 24 of them? Where are we supposed to keep this massive inventory of sports goggles? Does anyone have a suggestion for a place where I can get sports goggles and safety glasses with no minimum buy in order?

Have you looked at Wiley X? I don't know what the buy in is but at least you can get safety glasses and sport goggles in the same place, worth looking in to. I even made a couple of pair of Wiley X swimming goggles for some customers, they turned out pretty nicely.

We dropped Rec Specs when they raised their wholesale frame prices significantly but then gave a discount if you used their lab for the lenses. No thanks, already work with too many labs and adding another for a frame line we barely sell doesn't interest me in the least.

Hilco makes an ok sport frame w/straps, different sizes and shapes, no minimum buy in.

We did! They also had a minimum buy in order of 24 frames surprisingly. It might have been even more. I just don't understand these offices that are in need of THAT many safety glasses, tactical glasses, etc. I made a pair of POF Wiley X's and liked them a lot though.

Will definitely look into that. Thank you for the tip!

Yea, we didn’t get enough sport glasses business at my last place, same scenario as far as needing minimums. I used Recspec years ago till they went into WM whom retailed them for almost my wholesale price. The Hilco’s filled our ticket. They do have some very usable styles and colors.

Disclaimer: Yes, I’m the secret owner of Hilco….I also own Esilux, and most things optical.
