    Gst & Pst

Since I am learning the B.C. Canadian Ways...

GST ~ when to charge, what to charge and when not to charge?

PST ~ when to charge, what to charge and when not to charge?

Anyone know somewhere on the net that this information is available so I can do some reading for the North Vancouver area? Or do taxes even go by areas?

    Thanks MUCHO...

Don't charge PST or GST on any rx items.

PST is province to province, so I cannot help you on what you would or would not beyond that.

Clip on is it does not go with the sale of a prescription, don't if it does.

            Her Ya Go, Snitgirl

The Ministry of Small Business and Revenue collects unpaid bills, fines and assessments on behalf of various BC Provincial Government Ministries and Branches.

This link is directly to the BC Gov't website dealing specifically with optical retailers.

GST is nationwide, PST rules vary from province to province.

In our case (BC) no PST on anything. No GST on any Rx products (i.e. frame and lenses, CL, lenses into POF, clip-on if done at same time as lens sale). Charge GST on non-Rx products (frame only, non-Rx sunglasses, contact lens solution, clip-on done after lens purchase)

                    Sales Taxes
                    1. General Sales tax is a tax on the consumption of goods and services charged by both federal and provincial levels of government. The federal tax is the Goods and Services Tax (currently 6%) hereafter called GST. To harmonize the provincial and federal sales tax system, Quebec introduced the Quebec Sales Tax (QST) currently 7.5% that is applied on the amount of the GST included.
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) was implemented in the provinces of Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. HST is calculated at a rate of 14%, in lieu of GST, when goods or services are made available to purchasers in the participating provinces.
Special rules exist for supplies made by public sector bodies (including universities) that are registered charities. It is important that Faculties and Departments understand the basic mechanics of each tax and the accounting procedures to accommodate them. The reason is twofold: to comply with tax legislation as it relates to the diverse University activities; and to maximize the University's refund or rebate of the taxes paid. If a department's activities cannot be interpreted given the rules outlined below, queries should be directed to the General Accounting office of the Accounting Department by e-mail to: ..............

                      Hi Myra,

Just some FYI.....I just read about PST for Optical Retailers in BC

                      Here is info:

Sales of glasses, contact lenses and other optical goods sold on prescription are non‐taxable. This means you do not charge your customers PST on these items.

Sales of glasses and optical goods sold without a prescription are taxable. This means you charge your customers PST on these items.

~ I will e mail you the information so that you have it ~
