There's an easy and no-charge way to have your own Internet "radio" station for the kind of music that you like, via http://www.pandora.com
OptiBoard member "j.west" told me about it.
Since jazz is my much preferred genre, I have set up four different Pandora "stations" that I can select from: Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane and Maynard Ferguson.
The Pandora software is way out on the "cutting edge" - it actually analyzes the chord sequences and rhythms of the tracks in its music database to decide what to play for you - but it's as easy to use as you want to make it. All I had to do was to type in the names of those four jazz artists that I said (above). If I'm on the Miles Davis station (for example), the next track that it plays could feature Miles Davis - or it could be Sonny Rollins or some other jazz artist that the software "thinks" has performed in the "Miles Davis" style. But there are other ways to signal your preferences to the Pandora "software brain" ... There's a FAQ.
I listen to my Pandora "stations" a lot, at the same time that I am online doing other things - like OptiBoard. I have medium speed (DSL) Internet access. It doesn't interfere with any of my other online activities. I don't think that you can use it with a dial-up or modem type connection.
I know of two other OB members that have tried it.
In theory, it's going to earn its keep by displaying or playing commercial advertisements - but so far, I have not seen even one ad or popup ad of any kind, (not heard any voice ads in between music tracks, either) and I've been using it for months. And I haven't gotten any noticeable increase in "spam" email, either. I don't think they need any email address.
I can easily blow a couple of hours on Google maps. Too much fun. I'm trying to convince my parents to paint a target on their roof, so we can see it the next time google refreshes the images.

I do the same thing with Ebay, especially the real estate ads.
