new computer for christmas? click here

For those of you with a new PC for christmas.. that free version of Norton Antivirus or MACafee has probrably expired, and your few days of grace are over. Be sure to either buy the package or get new anti-virus software. AGV do a free package for home users which is very good

I have used this for over two years and have not had one virus problem and I use my laptop all of the time.

I to have been using AVG for a long time. Additionally, I would recommend the following:

      1) Zone Alarm- Free Fire Wall

      2) Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner

      http://www.download.com/Bazooka-Adwa...-10247782.html

      3) Spybot - Search & Destroy

      http://www.download.com/Spybot-Searc...-10122137.html

      4) Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition

      http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

These free downloads will protect your computer against most attacks. The last 3 need to be manually run once a week and prior to running you a should make sure they have been updated.

That is an excelent list of software, all free, and all leaders in the field. I wholeheartedly agree. I am happy to walk people through the reasons why they should be used, or setting them up

For a great ad-blocker, get Ad Muncher: www.admuncher.com

I don't know how I handled the wilds of the Internet before discovering ad blockers.

I'd like to third (fourth?) the AVG recommendation. However, I use Sygate's free firewall--Zone Alarm has some irritating system-specific issues for me.

I must admit that AVG is a life saver. The person who was in charge of the office before me, wasn't computer savvy. The first day I was on, I noticed that their antivirus software had expired. I was able to find AVG, install it, and after all day scanning, I removed over 197 different viruses, worms, etc off the computer.

Updates automatically, you can schedule scans to run during off hours, and has caught everything that has tried to come in thus far.

To tell you the truth.. it makes me rethink why I have been paying for Symantec all this time...
