Win DVD not working

My XP Home edition crashed, so I upgraded to XP Professional. When I did, my Win DVD which was bundled with Gateway software restore pkg. does not function.

As far as I can figure, on Device Manager, the Secondary IDE channel is not working properly. I tried to reinstall, but the advanced setting continues to show that the current transfer mode is not applicable. What now? I tried to delete and reinstall this, but this didn't help.

Anybody have any ideas?

Was the reinstall done over an existing partition on the drive ............or was the hard drive formatted for a clean install?

Go into the bois and force your dvd drive into a higher transfer mode.
Try getting something like power dvd to see if that works.

UDMA is what i mean....
Try udma 4 in bios for your dvd rom.

I got to thinking a bit more about this and if using the bios does not solve the problem ...................then it may be that the drive is being treated as DMA (direct memory access)by XP. You can try changing the transfer mode settings to PIO (programmed input/output).
When you try to configure the direct memory access and programmed input/output (DMA/PIO) settings for a device on a Windows XP-based computer, the settings may not appear in the Properties dialog box for the device.
This issue occurs because the DMA/PIO settings are configured for each controller instead of for each device.
In Windows XP, you do not find the settings in the properties dialog box for the device. What you would need to do is .... Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager.
Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Click the controller that you you want to configure DMA/PIO settings for.
Click the Advanced Settings tab.
In the Transfer Mode box, click either PIO Only or DMA if available.
