Spray on A/R ?
So the other day I over heard one of our opticians talking about how A/R coatings have improved from earlier methods when they just sprayed it on. Now I have heard of spin cast A/R coatings and have heard that the quality is rather low due to the inability to have the spin cast coatings reach the specific thickness needed. I can't imagine any company spraying on an A/R! Of course before I correct her I would like to know if any company ever used such a method.

I think Ronco had a spray on coating at one time.

Why would you correct her? Unless she's going to tell the patient uncoated lenses are more durable... A/R companies have biggier lies in thier press statements.
Do I sound bitter about A/R? Chris, you're my hero this morning

Maybe a reference to "sputter deposition"?

No, you're right. It's just that they are the same product in different packaging.

Didn't ODC have an "AR" that you applied in the mold before squirting in the monomer? I thought that was the stuff WM used at first. We even had people come in that had their WM AR glasses only a few weeks and they looked like oil on water.

ODC had a film type that was moulded into the lens, as did Nexgen Vision. The Chemlux system was a spin-on that some people had trouble with (I didn't). There is now "someone" that is working on a dip type AR.

Spray on AR
My guess is that in the early days someone trying to explain how AR was produced left the impression, (due the process being performed in a vacuum), that the material actually was sprayed on. Maybe having a Ion gun would lead someone to come to the conclusion that it is sprayed out of the gun?
The fact is that AR is a stack of different materials built to exact thickness of each layer. So in theory you if you had the right way control the thickness maybe you could spray it on. But I have never heard of this even being attempted. |

I know that you invented practically everything chemical, but are you trying to tell us that this is not your real hair?!? ![]() Nor this? ![]() So you're not only the inventor, but you use the product?!? Who cares how you apply it? Ion, neon, or water gun...it looks great on you!!
