    Optical Books-What do you Have?

Harry Chiling brought up a great subject in the Little Disappointed thread. It was brought up that we should list what optical books we have. I will start with some that I have. I am working on a article about this subject, so your input would be very helpful!

1.) System for Ophthalmic Dispensing-Brooks, Borish
    2.) Ophthalmic Dispensing-Stimson
    3.) Clinical Refraction-Borish
4.) Dictionary of Visual Science-Schapero, Cline, Hofstetter
5.) Ophthalmic Mechanics and Dispensing-Epting, Morgret
    6.) Tops Manual-DiSanto
    7.) Ophthalmic Lenses-Emsley, Swaine
8.) Ophthalmic Lenses: Their History, Theory~and Application Bausch and Lomb
    9.) Introduction to Ophthalmic Optics-Meister
10.) Optical Formulas Tutorial-Stoner, Ferguson, Perkins
11.) The Masters Review-National Academy of Opticianry
12.) Advanced Certification Exam Review Course-National Academy of Opticianry
13.) Handbook of Optics-Optical Society of America
    14.) 20/20 is not Enough-Seiderman, Marcus
    15.) Spectacle Frame Dispensing-Clayton
    16.) Optometric Practice Management-Elmstrom

Oh Fezz, I'm so jealous! My library is minuscule compared to yours (so's my budget apparently:p)

    1) The Ophthalmic Assistant (7th ed) - Stein, Slatt, Stein
    2) Atlas of Primary Eyecare Procedures (2nd ed.) - Casser, Fingeret, Woodcombe
    3) Clinical Manual of Contact Lenses (2nd Ed.) - Bennett, Henry
    4) Contact Lenses Fundamentals and Clinical Use - Stein, Freeman, Stein, Maund
    5) The Contact Lens Manual (3rd ed.) - Gasson, Morris
    6) Ophthalmic Medications and Pharmacoloogy - Duvall, Kershner
    7) Basic Procedures - DuBois
    8) Special Skills and Techniques - Van Boemel

This is what I've got at home. I have a few more at work, so I'll add them once I get there.

    9) Ophthalmic Terminology: Speller and Vocabulary Builder - Stein
    10) Practical Retinal Photography and Digital Imaging Techniques - Tyler, Saine, Bennett
    11) Instrumentation for Eyecare Paraprofessionals - Herrin
    12) Self-Study Course for Paraoptometric Certification (2nd ed.) - AOA
    13) Optics, Retinoscopy, and Refractometry - Lens

Now that I look at the list...it's not that minuscule, is it??

    Gee, I'm so ashamed.

Ophthalmic Surfacing for Plastic and Glass Lenses by Richard Mancusi is my only technical book.

I also have a 1975 copyright of Look How Many People Wear Glasses by Ruth Brindze.

And I appear in a couple of faith-based books written by one of my special customers, Roberta Messner. She writes inspirational books along with some nurse-based medical books dealing with her neurofibramatosis. She has been a special fit due to the asymmetrical nature of her head, coupled with an invasive brain tumor penetrating her temple.

That's my Ophthalmic Optics Library which doesn't include any Biology, Physics, or Anatomy books I own. If those were included heck I would have to 500 - 600 books in total. Attached is three bookshelves that we currently have up. A few months back we had two additional bookshelves that collapsed under the weight of the books and the office was literaly (pun intended) covered in books. Since then we have put much of them in storage. This doesn't include the two books just recently given away, the three books in the mail and the many books I have loaned out never to come back again.

Most of the stuff I post is not my knowledge but me acting as a proxy to the books in my library. I can't tell you how many times I have found the answer to a question that was asked on here just beacuse I decided to crack the books open and do a little reading. Can't say I have read them all, but I'm trying and one day I can say I read them all but don't remember a thing. If anyones interested in amassing a great collection of books here's what you do.

Call a local college near by and find out the dates for "Book buy backs". Goto the schools during these days and hang out in front of the library. Some people will look at the line and start moaning and groaning so you offer to buy the book back and they could avoid the line. They ask how much you say $5.00 to $10.00 some will go for it some won't. Also a lot of times the school migh tbe using a newer edition of a book the next semester so they won't be buying some books back. Ask the book store if they have a free book bin where students throw books away that they are not buying back, you could get a ton of books this way and if you are looking to make a little money you could just rol that cart out to your car and load the trunk up and sell them on ebay one at a time or in lots, this money can in tun buy more books this time titles that you want. Also I created a resource for books that shows the used book prices for tons of ophthalmic books http://books.onlineopticianry.com I can't tell you how many times I have seen opticla books being sold for $0.50 and no I did not misplace the decimal point thats 50 cents plus shipping the book coems to $4.00 or something so you skip starbucks for a day and become a better optician. Lots of great ways to get books if anyone wants.

I just wish I had an opticianry school near me so I could hang out in their library. The people at Hopkins got tired of me constantly sneaking in and after a while they just started to let me in so I have access their, I went down to GW University a few months back and tried to sneak into their library (they have a big ophthalmology and ophthalmic technologist program there so thats probably like my mecca). I didn't get in, but I got plans of making another attempt and this time I'm getting in. I figure a bit of social engineering on my part to get past the person at the gates, they're often students so they are not very prudent about checking everyone. I'll have my wife roll up with baby and ask questions and when they ask her for student ID she'll drop a full bottle of milk and the guy will more than likely be annoyed and distracted long enough for me to hop the turnstyles and whalla promise land, of course it will probably cost me via my wife with credit card and carte blanche in Georgetowne $$$$$$$, but it should be worth it. :D

It's funny - I actually collect books. Mostly antiques that are hand-bound or scholastic primers (I love the ones that have notes written in the margins) and anything by my favorite physicist, Richard Feynman but I never collected technical ophthalmic ones.

I guess now is as good as time as any - armed with your great pointers!!!

I've been collecting optical books for many years now. Most of my collection can be found here, aside from certification study aids and the like. Many of these I own for the sake of posterity. But, honestly, you can find the most useful information within a handful of these books. Dispensing opticians, for instance, will find the vast majority of what they would ever need to know in Brooks's System for Ophthalmic Dispensing, 3rd edition. This text, perhaps along with one or two good books on geometrical and visual optics to supplement the practical lens theory (Rubin's Optics for Clinicians comes to mind), will provide most eye care professionals with a formidable foundation in spectacle lenses and dispensing.

I agree with you Darryl. Its funny, when I was typing out my list, I flipped thru the books. Lets face it, optics don't really change that much.

    Library

Bob Topley was Treasurer of the CLSA and an influental member of opticianry.

While cleaning out his dispensary, there were several textbooks. I thought it a waste just to 'get rid of them' and so, I started a memorial library in his name. As you can see, the library has grown and grown, to over 400 books (yes there are duplicates) but the point, IMHO, is to make the books available to more people, rather than less...

That's a great idea and I thought of a suggestion to optiboard would be to make a book swap, which you'll find on the net nowadays, where a person would swap a book and get credits towards getting another book that's on the list so even those with smaller library's have an opportunity to read through a vast number of industry books. It could be a membership only feature that would benefit many.

    Harry,

That's a great idea! I would certainly go for that since there are tons of books on my Amazon.ca wishlist that I'll probably never get a chance to buy... :( I wonder how many other people would be interested.

(You may not be the original Harry, but you're the one with the biggest library so far!)

    New additions

Oof, I haven't been around for a couple of months...now I have all these threads to get through....

But I'll start with the new additions to my library. The docs were going to throw these out, so I very generously gave them a new home :D

    14) Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology - Spalton, Hitchings, Hunter
    15) The Ciba Collection of Medical Illustrations Vol. 1 The Nervous System Part 1 Anatomy and Physiology - Netter
    16) Dictionary of Visual Science (4th Ed.) - Cline, Hofstetter, Griffin
