Opticians Association of Canada REsponds to the Merger News

Industry Leaders Respond to Essilor-Luxottica Merger

InfoClip will be posting Canadian industry reaction to the ground-shifting mega deal between the two industry behemoths. Bookmark this page for further reactions as we receive them.
Robert Dalton: Executive Director Opticians Association of Canada
The trend of mergers and acquisitions continues in the global economy and the Optical industry is no exception. The merger of Essilor and Luxottica will create a massive 55 billion CDN international company focused on eye wear and all that it encompasses. The workforce of 140,000 includes a large number of opticians who offer vision care services in Luxottica’s retail sector and serve as consultants and managers in the Essilor labs, lens divisions and marketing sectors.
The Opticians Association of Canada has traditionally had a great relationship with both Luxottica and Essilor. Their support of the OAC and recognition of opticians’ skills in the delivery of vision care services is a testament to that dedication. The OAC hopes this merger will solidify the relationship and deepen both companies commitment to deliver safe and effective vision care through the services of Licensed Opticians.
The merger is expected to have little effect on our independent Optician owners as the segment of the population who are requesting custom personalized services and/or alternative eyewear selections is growing and the boutique experience can offer choice to that demography. Speaking to our young entrepreneurial Opticians out there, we can only wait and see what new innovative business ideas will be created in light of this continued competition.
The OAC continues to monitor all business developments internationally and locally. We believe in collaboratively working together with all eye care professionals and industry to ensure the safe delivery of the highest quality of vision care services. ”

Sounds like the OAC is going to try to get more sponsor money out of them

With e-commerce as a priority, they already own the largest block of on-line opticals and want to expand as a priority, do opticians want their money ?

I have to laugh really...the OAC and its leader have been in bed with Plastic Plus for the last couple of years operating a web based e-commerce company that is basically direct to consumers and only provides a measely 'finders' fee' to any independent optician who signed up to be on their panel list of dispensing pickup locations. The entire process bypasses the independent optician until the very end, just so they can include their membership and keep it legal. This reeks to high heaven yet nobody really complained about it.

But when Essilor does it, there's a major earthquake and tsunami that follows. Just playing devil's advocate here - Essilor financially supports these associations and organizations to the fullest degree and spends a ton each year on sponsorship. These associations are already on life support, let's be honest, and would have already been dead if it wasn't for their support.

Lab Insight......thanks you for your post. However the Plastic Plus model is completely legal (I believe) and doesn't flaunt the rules as does Essilor's websites. Perhaps the Ontario College of Opticians weren't comfortable taking the legal action they recently did against Clearly until there was an internet model in place that adhered to the current regulations? Just wondering......................

Lets see if Essilor now the new owner of LensCarfters will use the over 1,000 store in North America also as service centers
for their present on-line sellers and newly to aquire on-line opticals.

If they start to advertise such a venture that will make the public running to LC and opticians will loose out.

Of course, and it should be as it is Luxottica owned.

There are presently also 15 Essilor owned online opticals, where it will be added.

Thereby cutting out the pesky middleman, the optician. Kiosks out front and baboons in the back. All the better to serve the millennials and their children.

Yes the segment of becoming the new, getting to be the older generation, and is the first one that can not live, breathe and eat or drink, without their minicomputer (telephone) screen in front of their eyes, day and night.

They are the ones that fully embrace the internet at its fullest.

That segment is the one that has started to depend on the internet for everything under the sun.

Here is the statement made as one of the main reasons of the merger:

If this is not a clear message handed out by the the merging corporations, that should trigger immediate counter measures by conventional retailers of one kind or another to avoid any damage before it is done.

Furthermore they also have all the support by the professional associations they have supported forever.

Redhot Jumper However it seems that nobody cares anymore about eyeglass politics...................

...................funny, I made the last post on this thread 7 days ago. No more comments neither pro nor against.

This is like 10 years ago when discussions came up on online opticals and then got totally ignored a few days later.

Every pair of glasses sold on-line is not sold by a qualified and professionally accepted retailer.

BC and Quebec are now deregulated Provinces and Ontario is now also getting to join the gang as the next one.

The main motto of the newly merged Essilux is to widen and enlarge their internet presence.

Chris, I think you are correct. Nobody cares anymore about the politics. So great, let's all get back to business; nothing to see here...

I been thinking about your post, my post, any post and threads being abandoned by all others.

Then We assume that everybody lost interest in the subject discussed and also leave.

Actually what really makes a thread being successful, is when it gets a lot of views on the counter, not by the amount of post where the majority comments consist one or two words.

Yes it could be, while the person seems to deal in equipment according to other posts he made.
