Which states require an Optician to use a professional designator after their names, i.e. LDO, RDO when identifying themselves at work?
I can give you a starting list:
GA, FL, TN, NC, SC, NY, CT, MA, HI, NV, AK, VA, RI
Ophthalmic Optician
Society to Advance Opticianry
No, VA does not require a designator. I'm looking for states who do. The only one I feel fairly confident about is MA.
i just decided what we should have on our name tags, P.O. No one would give any lip!
Nobody wants to get a P.O. P.O.'d.

Carrie,
Here is the rule stating the information in Georgia. It's not a LAW (statute) but a rule.
420-4-.02 Unprofessional Conduct.
(2) A licensed dispensing optician shall display either the title “Licensed Dispensing Optician”when such person is providing direct patient care.
or the abbreviation “L.D.O.” on a name tag or other similar form of identification during times

NY has a "name badge" law for all health care professionals. For opticians, they are required to wear a badge that states:
John Q. Public
Ophthalmic Dispenser
and, if applicable, underneath that is written
Contact Lens Practitioner
If they are apprentices, the badge must state "trainee"
Needless to say, you hardly ever find anyone wearing a "trainee" badge, especially in the corporates. Instead they have name tags designating them as "frame stylist", or "sales associate."
In Section 5.4 of our regulations, this is the quote....
In a strict interpretation there is no requirement to use a designator other than your license number.I know mine says registered dispensing optician but I don't think that is a requirement,
- Every dispensing optician shall conspicuously display his license in his place of business or employment. Every dispensing optician employed by a corporation or other business organization shall ensure that his own license is displayed conspicuously in the offices of the corporation or organization where members of the public come to obtain opticianry services.
- Every dispensing optician shall, during any time in which he or she is engaged in the practice of opticianry, attach to his or her jacket, coat or other garment in a conspicuously visible manner an identification badge or tag which sets forth in large print his or her name and license number. If he or she is employed by another person, corporation or business entity, he or she shall also set forth on the badge the name of his or her employer, and the dispensing optician license number of his employer where applicable. The dispensing optician shall wear the identification badge or tag so that it is visible to any individual meeting or communicating with the optician in person.

Didn't notice this was an old thread before replying. However the information below is still accurate.
Florida doesn't specifically require a designator after the licensee's name, but does require identification in some manner.
Here's the relevant rule:

(1) The wearing of a name tag which identifies the licensee as an optician;
(2) By orally disclosing to the patient, upon the licensee’s initial in-person contact with the patient, that the licensee is an optician;
(3) By providing, upon the licensee’s initial in-person contact with the patient, a business card or similar document which identifies the licensee as an optician; or
(4) By placing notification in the lobby or waiting area of the location where the licensee practices, which contains a photo of the licensee and which identifies the licensee as an optician.
