How about a source for parts?
two words: boat anchor
thats what I thought too & I even offered this guy a deal on the extra patternless one I have for sale, but unlike the rest of us, he's a stubborn old optician. So we took apart his AIT & need to replace some bearings in the head unit & possibly a chain gear or two.
Bearings usually aren't hard to find -- he may have to visit a machine shop or two (be sure he takes the bearings with him). The gear may be harder, but that too may be a stock part somewhere. A good machine shop with vendor catalogs goes a long way to solving a lot of problems like this. I don't know what we would have done without Ickler Machine and Bearing Company here in St. Cloud MN.
If he goes ahead and tears it down, it's a good idea to replace all the bearings, not just the ones causing problems. Many times, when a bad bearing is replaced but not the others, it is the other one that goes bad 2 weeks later.
WW Grainger
I figured the bearings would be the easy part, they are McGill bearings & we do have some good sources here in Phx. I have a Grainger a couple miles away, but I never have as much luck with them.
I probably have one - I'll check when I get to work.

I used to love working on mine. However, I didn't know much, so I drew pictures as I went...:) I love the newer technology for reality, but it was fun back then as well, except when I broke a fingernail.:)

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.
Graingers doesn't carry specialized bearings, only inch-inch (ID/OD). Many times bearings in these machines are either inch/metric or metric/inch or just plain metric/metric. I've never been able to source a bearing through Grainger.
I have a complete manual for it. What pages do you need? I can scan them and email them to you, and you'll get better resolution than posting them here.
Oh, and these people should have any bearing you need.

There used to be local branch here and when I first got our Takubomatic auto groover, we had some problems with it not following stepper curves and getting the groove in unevenly. I knew the local manager and she had some custom-made Teflon shaft bearing made for it and boy, did that ever improve the performance over the Delrin bearings. And I sold my spare pair of them to a friend at another local shop for his. They're still working good after 20 years.

You can e-mail me at mattv@aitindustries.com. I can provide you a complete diagram and the parts you may need to fix it.
