My optician friend is thinking of becoming an orthoptist. I never heard of this profession but by info that I found on it, it might be a waste of time. Did any of you ever hear of orthoptist or worked with one?
Thanks.

you know I have never met one but I think that they work with ophthamologists and help with vision therapy. I looked into it a few months ago but I don't know how big of a field it is. If there are any "orthoptics" out there maybe you can help.
I used to work with one and have known several but they seem to be quite rare these days. I do think they have thier own web page and organization, why not check there?

Orthoptics and Pleoptics is a profession working under specialised Ophtahlmologist's mostly training amblyoptic patients. These patients are 99% chiuldren at a young age who have had styrabismus operations prior to which one eye became disfuntional because of double images.
In Europe these orthoptic clinics are usually added to official eye clinics in hospitals. There are a few around the USA too.
I am actually working with an 84 year old retired orthopist. She has started a non-profit organization called Marco-EyeLand Erradicate Amblyopia Foundation. She had surgery on her eyes back in her late 20's and was left with double vision as a result. She has had double vision for more than fifty years. I am amazed at her passion for these young kids. My son is doing a public service announcment for her foundation next Saturday in Naples, Fl. He has amblyopia and as a result of frustration with patching him I made a DVD for him called "The Eye Patch Kids" which is now on the Prevent Blindness website under resource page for patching children. I have had parents e-mail me from all over the country, Canada and Australia telling me how much it has helped their kids. I think being an orthopist is a very good profession. So I would say go for it. You do help alot of kids out with amblyopia/strabismus.

I work with 2 orthoptists at the practice I am currently at. One of the techs I work with is also going to be an orthoptist it requires a bachelors degree and 2 years of additional schooling. If you are COA you only have to do 1 additional year of schooling. I believe their are 12 programs for orthoptists in the USA. I live near one of them wich is why I have run into 5 orthoptists in my career. Orthoptists as well as Ocularists are becoming rare to find and I would not be suprised in the near future their being a demand for them.
