Tennessee Ernie Ford.. now I have that song stuck in my head along with Big John from Johnny Cash. My dad absolutely loved the deep voice of country. Well that and Dolly Parton ;) He loved her for many reasons!

Mom on the other hand liked lighter pop stuff. Listened to a lot of the Four Seasons, Beach Boys, Paul Anka..I remember her having the "Supergirls" album set with "It's My Party". "Leader of the Pack," "Chapel of Love", and so on..

Songs that I remember singing as a kid...Like the Lion Sleep Tonight, and Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor.. My son loves to sing as well. You should have seen all the people looking at us all funny as we walk into GenCon singing "In the jungle..the mighty jungle.. the lion sleeps tonight.."

What's really scary is how he loves the song 1985. Here it is they could be singing about me; and my son is singing about "When did Motley Crue become classic rock" at the top of his lungs. It just cracks me up because he has no idea who Motley Crue is!

I believe the first albumn I begged for was Kool and the Gang. Even today I get my son, the neices and nephew singing along with Celebration. Throw in there some Sister Sledge and "We are family"... and the kids will "Shake your Booty".

And yes.. I have very ecclectic taste in music :)

Did you have to hand-crank it?

My first record player was this red-and-white plastic box that unsnapped and played a really scratchy version of records like "You're Just too Good to be True."

Today, about the only music I can really stomach long term is classical or jazz. Guess I'm "maturing."

I'm in the middle of converting my vinyl into .wav and then .mp3 files. Just completed Tubular Bells. I'm still trying to figure out how the "eliminates clicks and hiss" software works. :hammer:

Breaking Up is Hard to Do, Neil Sedaka--the original fast version, not that sapped up 80's cover. Oh the memories--that song is so evocative of that summer I was 13 and went to my first girl/boy party. It was outside on my older sister's girlfriend's patio/pool. I danced with a boy who was SIXTEEN. Needless to say, I was entirely too cool. I can still recall the warm air and the smell of sixteen year old boy afershave! And that funny white/blue glare from pool lights at night.

Oh youth is so wasted on the young!!!:p

This is my earliest music memory, and I'm sure we all sang it endlessly as kids. Bit sad as I hate Chelsea.

Blue is the colour, football is the game
We're all together, and winning is our aim
So cheer us on through the sun and rain
    'cause Chelsea,Chelsea is our name

Here at the Bridge whether rain or fine
We can shine all the time
Home or away, come and see us play
    You're welcome any day

Blue is the colour, football is the game
We're all together, and winning is our aim
So cheer us on through the sun and rain
    'cause Chelsea,Chelsea is our name

Come to the Shed and we'll welcome you
Wear your blue and see us through
Sing loud and clear until the game is done
    Sing Chelsea everyone

Blue is the colour, football is the game
We're all together, and winning is our aim
So cheer us on through the sun and rain
    'cause Chelsea,Chelsea is our name

Danced with a 16 year old!?! Wow, you had it goin' on that summer...

Reminds me of my first "adult kiss." I'd been going out with this girl for about 4 months (yeah, I dated like my grandfather taught me to fish- slow and easy ;^). I remember her MOM had even got her a button that said something like "kiss me, I won't bite" or something like that. Anyway, we were returning from an Orioles game and were in the far back of the station wagon (with dad driving and brothers in the back seat- how romantic) and the "SAFETY Dance" song was playing. I remember thinking "if I don't kiss her before the end of this song, I never will." So, right there between the "F" and "E" in safety, wham- there it was! Not too bad, as I recall, and as they say- "practice makes perfect" (and I've always been a perfectionist 8^).

Anyway, you're correct- youth is entirely wasted on the young!

The first song I remember hearing on the radio? Who knows? I can tell you the first record I ever bought, though, and that was the little 45rpm "Mr. Roboto" by Styx. I still dig that song, even if it did begin the downfall of Styx. :shiner:

My father actually owned an old juke box that only played very thick and heavy 78's.

"I'm a pink toothbrush, you're a blue toothbrush, haven't we met somewhere before?" and of course, "the Teddy Bears Picnic"!! :D

Sheesh, that's going waaaay back to the late 40'2 or early 50's! (I was born in '47)

After that, the first big hit I loved was Rock Around the Clock with Bill Haley and the Comets, and then anything, anything, anything by Elvis!:)

Well, I can hum it after the first two lines, but thats not much help, now is it? BBC radio used to have a children's favourites show on a Saturday morning, and that used to be much requested. I know that we lived at Moore Grove when I first heard that, and we left there when I was 4 yrs old, so it was 1951 or earlier. Before your time, I am sure!!;)

Oh dear...this might just prove that I'm one of the "youngsters" on the board :o

The first pop song I remember hearing on the radio was "Karma Chameleon" by Boy George. Even funnier though would have to be the first cassette I bought...New Kids on the Block.

I swear my taste in music has improved since then! :p

I couldn't believe that there was a popular song about toothbrushes, so I googled it and it is by Max Bygraves and here are the lyrics:

    You're a Pink Toothbrush, I'm a Blue Toothbrush

    You're a pink toothbrush, I'm a blue toothbrush
    Have we met somewhere before?
You're a pink toothbrush and I think toothbrush
That we met by the bathroom door.

Glad to meet toothbrush, such a sweet toothbrush
How you thrill me through and through
Dont be hard toothbrush on a soft toothbrush
'Cause I cant help loving you.

Every time I hear you whistle...... it makes my nylon bristle.......

    You're a pink toothbrush, I'm a blue toothbrush
Won't you marry me in haste?
I'll be true toothbrush, just to you toothbrush
When we both use the same toothpaste.

Now that just makes we want to snuggle with my honey!!

First purchased 45: "Brother Louie" by Stories (I think)

First LP (won on boardwalk, not purchased): The Paul Simon album with Codichrome (sp) on it. I can't even remember the name. My older brother said "you idiot, you could have picked "Madman Across the Water" by Elton John".

I don't think this was the first album or record I purchase but I did have one by QuickSilver Messinger Service featuring " Fresh Air " and also Delaney & Bonnie
featuring Eric Clapton and who could forget Iron Butterfly with " In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" officially the longest song at the time on any album going aver 17 min. taking up the whole second side of the album. And last but least Steppenwolf and " Born be Wild " and " Magic Carpet Ride ".

(Queen was an amazing group. Never was another before or after like them.)

Can't remember my first song, there were way too many, but it would've been late 60's: Maybe "Hey, There, Georgie Girl". I can remember when Jim Morrison would sing "Light My Fire" on the AM radio. Momma's and Pappa's, man, they were underrated. All that '60's hippie stuff.

    GEORGIE GIRL
    The Seekers

    Hey there! Georgie girl
Swinging down the street so fancy free,
nobody you meet could ever see
    the loneliness there inside you.

    Hey there! Georgie girl
why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don't try, or is it the clothes you wear?
You're always window shopping but never stopping to buy.
So shed those dowdy feathers and fly a little bit.
    Hey there! Georgie girl
    there's another Georgie deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and
oh, what a change there'd be,
The world would see a new Georgie girl.

    Hey there! Georgie girl
Dreaming of the someone you could be
Life is a reality, you can't always run away.
Don't be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself.
It's time for jumping down from the shelf a little bit.

Also, Motown was big back then. "Where Did Our Love Go?". "Walk On By" by Dionne Warwick...too many to remember. "Do You Know The Way to San Jose?"

Do you know the way to San Jose?
I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way.
Do you know the way to San Jose?
I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose.

L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years. How quck they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas

Truly, can anything rival the 60's for music? Diverse as can be, and sophisticated. The 70's were way too hard-rock-sex-drugs-and-rock-and-roll to be considered the best decade. Rock and roll was too nacent in the '50's, and while the music was fun, it was unsophtisticated.

The early to mid-eighties new wave is my personal favorite, though.
