Does anyone on the board know whether there are optician's licenses in North Carolina, and if so, what the requirements are?
Thanks.

Andrew,
You can ereach the board at 919-733-9321 to get an application package. There are several ways to get a license.
Requirements include:
1. An AAS degree in Opticianry and a 6 month Internship, or a 3.5 year Apprenticeship with a 6 month Internship.
2. A rigorous 2-day, 9-part exam that covers all phases of Opticianry.
3. If you currently hold a license in another state, you can apply directly and may receive a license if you have practiced in another state for 4 years with no problems with the board in that state, as long the requirement for licensure are similar. In other words, as long as the license cover the material covered on our board.
Please let me know if you have additional questions. I will be pleased to help any way I can.
Best regards,
Warren
All the folks I have known that have moved there (a lot!) have been wealthy, retired and love golf. I guess these are the qualifications for life in N.C.

I just spoke with someone at the North Carolina Board of Opticians and she said she could send me an application for state board exam waiver, but also said I would have to hold a NCLE certification with my current license in order for my request to be approved. Unfortunately, I do not know a WHOLE lot about contact lenses. I know about base curves in relation to corneal curvatures, and some about different materials used, and a little about corneal issues in relation to prolonged contact lens wear. I did buy the most updated Contact Lens Manual by the CLS, with a matching test review. I really want to know what I need to know by November so I can take that exam and pass. I know this is the first major step to getting my NC license. I will have been practicing as a Virginia Licensed Optician for four years at the end of this one. If anyone has any advice as to up my chances of passing the NCLE or easier ways of getting my NC license the info would be appreciated.
NC is a licensed state, quite a difficult state to get licensed as a matter of fact. Contact the NC State Board of OPticians at (919) 733-9321.
