Big Smile A NEW DISCOVERY ! *maybe*

In our office, one of the opticians stumbled upon an interesting scenario. We think this may be new, but not sure. We edges a grooved rimless and the lens was a little small. A common problem which usually results in tightening the cord a bit. What he did, however, is hold a lighter (open flame) about 3 inches below the cord to heat it and it shrunk just perfect. The lens fit like glove ! Don't ask me what made him think of doing this. Has anyone else tried this ? Did we create a new technique ? ? ?

Hate to burst your bubble but thats pretty much our preferred way of tightening 'supra' style frames.

skirk, I've known others that heat the monofilament to shrink it. I've also been under the impression that it weakens from heat. It might sound good as a quick fix, but you'd be better off in the long run by doing it properly and cut the mono to correct length.

    Actually...

the line is quite strong. Since it is a monofilament (hence, fishing line), it is usually made to be abrasion resistant, stretchable, shrinkable. If it can hold a fish while dragging it through 10 lbs of weeds, and you're pulling in weeds along with the fish, it will withstand the lighter test.

Flame is good, but a hot air blower works better (you will never mistakingly burn the cord off).

Hey Skirk, now that you're into discoveries maybe you can help me out.

I put the flame under the cord it certainly did shrink it but now I've got burn marks on the lens.

    What should I do now?

Well I guess if burns you replace the line.DA!Also you can see if the line if damaged enough to replace it.If not we may need some new specs.
