    ABO Advanced Certification

I am an ABO certified optician who has been certified through one renewal period. I am very interested in ABO Advanced Certification, however I do not understand how to go about it. Who can help me with the steps necessary. I have been to abo.org, but I need more specifics. Help...

I too have inquired about the Advanced ABO, and I have found it best to call ABO direct. They will send you a packet of requirements and even listings of where to get necessary study materials and courses. The exam, from I have been told, is pretty rigorous and you have to know your stuff. After obtaining the Advanced, you will be geared for the Masters. They (abo) will also provide you with info on how to obtain that degree as well.

    Good Luck.

    Degree Status

The Advanced Exam, nor the Master in Ophthalmic Optics Certificate are degrees, and not typically considered for academic credit. It is a valuable credential from a personal perspective, however. The ABO-AC exam is rigorous exam and successful candidates should be proud of their accomplishment. I encourage you to take it as a measure of your knowledge. The Masters is completed after the ABO-AC exam and will entail what they call a thesis. In reality it is a paper of relatively short length...about 15 pages or so, and in a topic selected by the candidate. It is reviewed and approved by a committee of experts and is judged primarily on content, not writing style. It does need to be referenced and an accurate reflection of your knowledge in the subject area. Good luck to both of you on your quest for the Masters....it is the ultimate credential for Opticians in this country.

The criteria for sitting for the exam has changed, and you may want to talk to ABO about it again. The pre-requisite courses aren't a requirement any longer. Look for something in the form of an Advanced review course and book in the very near future that should help a lot.

I would just like to thank WM for pointing out the mistake of "degree" as a description for personal advancement. Glad to know someone is watching our backs to make sure that we are gramatically and phonetically correct in our opinions.
