Question In what order do you clean your lenses?

If you folks remember, do me a favor and take note of the order in which you clean your lenses. If you notice your customers doing the same thing don't be shy about posting a note below.

Someone I know has thrown a theory on the table regarding how cleaning patterns cause remakes and I want to see if there really is a pattern to how most people clean their lenses.

(This is definitely a cry for help and a sign that I apparently have more time on my hands than I thought. I really do need to find better hobbies. :) )

I generally clean my glasses when the smudges start bothering me, and then whichever lense the offending smudge is on gets cleaned first. When I was still doing bench work my pattern was right then left, hold up to a light and touch up as necessary.

Well John, if you would rather and you get bored, you could always think about which lens you redo most, left or right.

    Jo -

I am "tightly wound" when it comes to my cleaning instructions for people - (I think "anal" would be the appropriate descriptive).

Let's see, I emphasize: Dust is the enemy; water ALWAYS first; NO WINDEX; soft cotton only (NO terrycloth) & NO paper!

I think when people spray cleaner on the lenses or breathe on them to fog them up, or "pump" the soap on the lens & then rub, well, that traps dust on the lens and THAT scratches the lenses!

Windex has amonia which can strip the frame coatings & crack the lenses but did you know it has PUMICE in it? yep - (a professional window washer informed us of that one...)

On a/r lenses, I DO like to wipe in one direction vs: circular.

    Jo -

Perhaps we need to organize a group cruise for those of us that need to "get out a little more" ! (how many people can fit on a cruise ship ? ;) )

Jo, here's a conundrum for you.

    My glasses:
Right handed and start with the outside left.

    Pt.'s Glasses:
Right handed and clean the inside right first.

    Can we vote twice??

    Dear Jo,
This is interesting research.I am right handed, but clean left lens first.
I have this strange habit of checking left lens first on focimeter.

Mmm, funny that as its nearly always the right lens that gets reordered......
Maybe got something to do with the fact right eye is the top of the order...

My friends theory is that most right handed people start cleaning their glasses left lens first, then right and back to the left. (I guess those folks that hold the frame by the bridge tend to hit the left lens when cleaning the right lens and have to over the left lens again to get the finger print off.) Left handed people tend to clean the right lens first, then left and back to the right.

Anyway, the theory is that since the left lens is often cleaned twice and almost scrubbed the second time to get the finger print off that left lenses are often reordered for scratches. This follows with the concept that there are more right handed people than left handed people.

I have to admit I am a righty and do start with my left lens.

Interesting to note that the above poll of optical professionals doesn't show many people going back over the left lens. I am going to guess my poll group is slightly corrupted because we are used to holding a frame so that we don't get finger prints on the lens we just cleaned while cleaning the other.

    Jo,

right handed: I wash the right lens first....... after left is washed, it's back to right lens to buff any smudges ....... final buffing is on the left

What a nifty idea: Conference/cruise....family is having fun while we are having classes....everyone has fun in the afternoons and evenings....
Why has no one done this yet????

Maybe it is a little more than most of us normally budget for our continuing ed and info gathering trips.... but wouldnt it be fun???
    (party...party...party.... oh yeah!)

Oh yes: I am right handed. I spray my lenses from left to right: front and then rear sides, and then wipe in circular motion (with soft cloth): the left lens first, then right, while I hold the frame by the bridge in my left hand, often switching to holding the frame just at the lenses ( so as not to torque the bridge as I am cleaning.)

Actually, one of our local wholesale labs and Transitions have done this. Started with a clamb bake then onto a cruise on the CT River and included a CE course. I couldn't make it because my cars brakes weren't braking and everyone else was on vacation but I heard it was a really good event from those who went.

Hmm, Vision Expo East is just around the corner????? :D

    Karen
I had the pleasure of cruising to Acapulco with optical professionals from all over the country somewhere around 1984/85 sponsored by American Optical. It was the absolute most fun we ever had on any vacation in our life. No CE courses were involved, it was just American Optical showing appreciation for us doing business with them.
Even the Captain of the ship came to us the last day of the cruise & told us in 25 years of navigating cruises, he never was with a group that had as much fun as we did and he wished all cruises were like that one.
So this is such a great idea that Karen has, lets put her in charge and get a trip scheduled for next summer. I believe most cruise lines will give group rates and anyone who wants to go can make a deposit & make payments & it will be a prepaid vacation.

Concerning the subject, I clean my glasses with my tee shirt or tie, randomly left & right.

    Confused

The lefties have shot down my theory. I wonder why the difference in the 1:1 split between southpaws and the almost 3:1 split between righties?

No difference with right or left .......................

    Jo said:

There is onviously NO difference between right or left handed cleaning that could do any damage on a long term basis.

If you would clean only the right or the left lens for a longer period of time this theory might apply, but as you clean both lenses at the same time it makes NO difference with which one you have started.

(This reminds me of the optical sales rep whoi used to sell two types of screwdrivers, one for either right or left handed opticians.)

However the big difference is with WHAT and how you are cleaning the lenses.

    In house at home:

1.) Rinse glasses under water to remove and flush off dust particles, which are the real culprits off long term damage by getting rubbed into the surface

    2) Take a drop of dishwasher soap and disperse it gently on all surface, this will dissolve the fat, grease and other oily deposits

    3) Dry with a soft towel.

    On the road:

    1) Blow on lenses to blow away any dust particles.

    2) Apply a surfactant Based Lenscleaner containing anti-stat and anti-fog surfactants (will NEVER damage had coats or AR coats) spread it around the suraces with your fingertip and dry with a soft towelette.

By applying the anti-stat and anti-fog properties glasses will not charge up with static electricity and collect and retain dust that can get rubbed into the lens surface and create the damage you mentioned above. The glasses will dissipate fogging up right away or much faster.

You also make an extra buck by selling a first class surfactant based versus a standard solvent based(Isopropyl) lens cleaner.

I think you forgot to mention the BRILLO PAD for those nasty stubborn stains that turned out to be scratches after all.

I always dry my "holding" hand between lenses, and hold the edge of the frame or lens to eliminate this additional work. Drying a lens a second time, times the number of pairs cleaned every day, times the number of days that you work every year is... well, too much time wasted. Life is short - don't waste it rubbing lenses! :)

I remember this! They were sitting on the bed and he put on a sock and shoe on one foot and Archie stops him and says "what about the other foot"? Meathead says "I'll get to it". Archie couldn't believe he did it this way, declaring that the entire western civilization puts their socks on first and then the shoes! And to do otherwise was absolute heresy. Funny stuff.
