Watchmaker, Biker and freezer worker help

Problem 1. I have a client who is a watchmaker. He has seen at some point a very specific design of magnifier which he has described to me in detail. I can picture this so probably have seen it somewhere, but cannot remember where.

Clip on to spec frame with 2 magnifying lenses on rotating arms, so that either or both lenses can be used. The lenses are small (20mm) diameter and the first gives approx 4X with the combination giving 10X mag. Have discussed keeler telescopes with flip up caps but he wants to be able to flick the whole system out of the way and deal with one pair of specs for everything. Ring any bells with anyone?

    Problem 2.
Client wishes to purchase old fashiones 'Biggins' type motorcycle goggles. Possibly leather but would be grateful for any info on suppliers.

    Problem 3.
Client works in large commercial freezer for approx 1hr at a time. Wearing specs he is steaming up when he enters freezer and is continually leaving the freezer to demist specs!
Has tried numerous sprays and goggles to no avail. Help!

This was one heck of a day!!

Regarding the freezer problem, I had a patient with the same problem and someone on Optiboard suggested this:

The person could have 2 pairs of glasses and keep one inside the freezer and one outside of the freezer.

We use Pacific Coast Sunglasses for our leather goggles. They are good to work with; however, you would have to contact them to find out how to deal with shipping to the UK.

The line they distribute is Nannini; perhaps there is a UK supplier.

Would contact lenses be wearable in such low temperatures, say -18C for a couple of hours? I assumed not, but I'd be happy to be wrong!

Spray ZERO-FOG on the lenses and see that the chemical is not wiped off, will work 100%.

Send me an e-mail with address and I will send you a free sample

They sell wholesale. We deal directly with them even though they are on the opposite coast and have been happy with the service. They seem happy that we are doing business with them all the way on the East Coast and we haven't had any problems.

As regards the steaming up, would an mar coat not solve it or are the temperature changes too extreme?

    Hello Shimsham,
I'd really like a supplier of these goggles in the UK. I will probably only want one pair and it's hardly worth the opening of an account in usa. Do you know of any?

It is by universal misunderstanding that all agree. For if, by ill luck, people understood each other, they would never agree.

done a bit of searching and this is the best i can come up with. before my computer crashed a couple of months ago i used to have loads of sites on my favourites. this one looks pretty good though. haven't checked if they are glazable. try putting goggles+biker into your favoutrite search engine. i got this one on yahoo but if you try a few others you might find something better. good luck
    shimsham.

Never found a mar to stop lenses steaming up here...
One old trick was to cut a potato and rub it on the lenses, that worked but dont know what it would do to plastic lenses...

How about being more specific ? Fried, mashed or raw? Will somebody test it on plastic lenses and while doing that also try out AR coated lenses.

just a thought, but in winter, when my bathroom mirrors steam up, i rub a drop of neat wahing up liquid on them. works great, would this work on lenses? obviously not on ar coated though, or would the liquid turn to an opaque jelly?

Any type of soft hand or dish soap has always worked more or less. 40 years ago you could buy cut up hand soap bars wrapped in aluminum foil in optical stores as an antifog product. Don't use automatic dishwasher soap because that is slighly corrosive.
Today's anti-fog products are a little more sophisticated and are made from surfactants (which are also in the soap family) There are about 18,500 of them on the market and to find the right combination between them to find and make a product is the big job.

    Wink

After you rub the potato on your lenses, you won't be able to see through them, but at least they won't fog up!
